I’m a little south in PGI. Surge was almost a foot higher than Helene. Garage took 14” of water, minor wind damage, my boat is ok but moved off the bunks and hanging way off the lift. Tomorrow’s project.

I feel lucky. I expected 3-4’ in the house based on predictions.

Hopefully that's indication of an impact point, instead of foundation settling.
(which wouldn't even show up in flexible vinyl siding)

Seems logical as the major wash would be down the street.

A day or two of re-skinning, plus new shutters, and some rubber hammers on the roof should bring it back to new.

I'm glad to hear you came out as well as you did. Tomorrow is another day.

David 10-11-2024 04:43 AM

Glad to hear all came out OK.

Dixie, I know what you mean about traffic around a storm! We're in zone C for evacuation in Galveston/Houston so not a huge risk but the wife (now ex-wife) insisted we evacuate for Rita. What a mess but we ran stop signs, stop lights, drove double the speed limit all within view of police cruisers who did nothing. They did keep people from using south bound lanes to go north until they stopped trying and then the real mess started. Luckily we turned off down some dirt road and escaped before things got too crazy. 23 hours for us to go 150 miles!

Checking in.......

Power and Internet went down at 9pm on Wed. I went to bed at 9:30pm. Wind was howling through Thursday mid-morning along with fair amount of rain. No issues here except lot of debris to clean up in the yard.

My portable generator worked like a charm. It has electric start too so no pulling a rope! :)

I powered my fridge, a window AC unit, a couple lamps, microwave, TV and DVD player. Cell phone service never went down so I also had that. I also have an antenna TV hooked up on the front deck so unscrewed the cable from that and ran it to my inside TV so I could access some OTA stations, if wanted. I also have a radio with quite a few features for emergency application.

The weather today is about perfect with some nice cooler and lower humidity conditions. 79 right now with 56% humidity!

I'll do some cleanup this afternoon but still nursing the broken rib so won't try to do it all in one day.

Those adversely affected are in my thoughts and prayers.....keep us posted if we can help.

Love you all......Baz

Glad you're OK.

I'm thinking about all of the stuff you've got on your porch, surf boards, signs, stiff beach bunnies, etc.... That must be a lot of stuff to stow when expecting rough weather.

astrochex 10-11-2024 09:07 AM

Great to hear chez Baz is all fine.

Holy cow!

This guy: https://www.yahoo.com/news/officials-rescue-man-floating-cooler-221600955.html

A man who was found floating dozens of miles off of Florida's Gulf Coast while clinging to a cooler to keep him afloat in the wake of Hurricane Milton was rescued on Thursday, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Officials said an Air Station Miami 65 helicopter crew rescued the man approximately 30 miles off Longboat Key, a town along the state's central-west coast.

The man, the captain of a fishing vessel, had gone out to the boat early Wednesday to make repairs after it became disabled earlier that week approximately 20 miles off John's Pass, according to the Coast Guard. As he was bringing the boat back to port, it got disabled again, the Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard said they had been in contact with the man after he was reported missing around noon on Wednesday. Weather conditions had already started to deteriorate as Hurricane Milton approached Florida's west coast, and the Coast Guard said it instructed him to put on a life jacket and "stay with the vessel's emergency position indicating radio beacon."

The Coast Guard said it then lost contact with the man at 6:45 p.m. ET Wednesday.

"This man survived in a nightmare scenario for even the most experienced mariner," said Lt. Cmdr. Dana Grady, Sector St. Petersburg's command center chief.

"To understand the severity of the hurricane conditions, we estimate he experienced approximately 75-90 mph winds, 20-25 foot seas, for an extended period of time to include overnight. He survived because of a life jacket, his emergency position indicating locator beacon, and a cooler," Grady's statement continued.

After being rescued Thursday, officials said the man was taken to Tampa General Hospital for medical care.

Hurricane Milton made landfall in the region Wednesday night as a Category 3 storm, bringing dangerous storm surge, powerful winds and heavy rain with it.

Due to the severity of the storm, some emergency services were suspended by officials across the state.

I sense that that guys story will make him rich when the movie gets made about his experience.

HobieMarty 10-11-2024 10:21 AM

Glad everyone got through the storm safely. Hey, I heard the "Lt Dan" story was faked, anybody else hear this?

Holy moly! That's a hell of a ride to tell the fellas down at the local watering hole!

I wonder if he told his rescuer "I'm not leaving without my cooler!"

GH85Carrera 10-11-2024 10:48 AM

We heard from my wife's aunt in North Fort Myers. She never lost power, and no flooding at her area. She has no cable TV or internet, but electricity so she is OK.

One of our customers live in Florida in the panhandle. His home insurance has a 100,000 deductible, and he is paying over 20K per year in insurance. He know it will go up soon and his area has been fine.

I feel for the residents. Having everything one owns destroyed would be devastating.
