^^^ Yep..I always wondered who lit those things.

I lived on a road with a steep hill. The road commission would keep barrels of sand full for people who couldn't make it up the hill in the winter. You needed to have your own shovel.

How about those black cannonball things filled with kerosene or whatever
Smudge pots...

Also still used by some local rail companies to keep switch gear operating in freezing weather

"Quick Fred, the super sauce!"

"Exit: stage left, skedaddling all the way!"

Maybe this is why we don't watch TV now. There's no room for stupid stuff like that.

Also, at first, they had an all metal tip...remember the TV ads of a guy stabbing a soda can open? dunno when they developed the plastic tip holding the ball.

Correct

I remember the change. The hot tip for getting the ink flowing again used to be heating the tip up with a match. When they went to plastic, that didn’t work anymore.

Why would the average person have a match laying around???

oldE 12-04-2024 12:05 PM

Every household had matches either for lighting fires or smoking materials.

Back in the 50's and 60's almost everyone smoked cigarettes.

Seriously though. People talk about waaaay back in year 2000. I think of 2000 as recent.

Me too. My adult grandchildren weren't born yet. I think more about how life has changed for their parents.

Do you remember rubber clams at HoJo's? Family tradition when we drove from Pittsburgh to Decatur, IL and stopped on the west side of Columbus because I 70 was not complete

My favorite restaurant meal in the early 60's was HoJo's fried clam dinner.
