'Twas a joke gentlemen, a joke. Today's lifestyle kids don't understand that people carried terribly dangerous ignitable items within their pockets on a regular basis back in the day. In fact, people carried cigarette lighters with them even if they (gasp!) didn't smoke themselves, because some comely young lady next to you might need a light...

I remember when there was a smoking or no smoking section on airplanes.

Like having a peeing and non-peeing section in the pool...

Remember getting dressed up to fly? When I was young, we would fly to Toronto to visit my grandparents that lived on Georgian Bay. Always dressed in your Sunday best.

Speaking of pools...our High School required everyone to take one semester of swimming in their Phys. Ed. class in either your sophomore or junior class. The schools were going through some sort of bacteria scare in those years.(1969)...so there were no swim suits/trunks allowed.

Same for the girls. The double doors to the pool were closely guarded when the girls were there for their class. :)

The Cuban missile crisis was far away and close by at the same time. Halifax is the east coast base for the Canadian navy. Two hours away by road these days, but close enough that my mother heard the explosion there in 1917. I suspect a nuclear explosion there would have affected us. I had 5 older brothers and a brother in law in the air force at the time.
Not good memories.

I do recall getting under the desks. Like that was going to help. In case of a nuclear event, out of the total destruction zone, if the roof fell there would be squashed kids all in a row for identification reasons?

I worked for a TV/Stereo store, I and a friend would deliver new TV’s and pickup and deliver TV’s that were repaired in the shop. The Console TV’s were the worst. They were another 3 feet wider than that. RCA 100 TV chassis, Reel to Reel Tape Player, Record Turntable, Amplifier and Equalizer, and multi speakers on each side. Solid wood structure and a door on the top. Picture this, a 250-300 lb behemoth as described above, going up an exterior spiral staircase, with me as the guy on the back holding the larger percentage of the weight. By the way, nobody tipped people but a waitress or waiter.

Yup, those machines also showed marginal. Usually at the very bottom of the green arc when new. One of my jobs at the TV shop. I’m sure Rexall and our TV shop made a money on these testers.

Today, people still carry "terribly dangerous ignitable items within their pockets on a regular basis." They are called cell phones!!![emoji23]

I owned that same model TV in when I got my first apartment. It was incredibly heavy.

Or to light the burner on the stove.

I remember living in California when it was not screwed up, that is how old I am.

They still have snow fences in Wyoming and Nebraska
