Don't JUST say "hello" - no hello

I work for a very large company. Most of the folks that I work with are in other states and often also other countries. A lot of my communications is via some form of chat (we have 2 chat clients that are used in our company at the moment, but at times there have been as many as four).

It's not unusual to get a chat from someone that says "hi," "hello," "good afternoon," etc.... And in most of those cases, if I don't respond, the person at the other end lets it drop. We're all busy folks, don't waste my time. If you don't want to skip the pleasantries, fine. But put it all together. I'll often ignore those unless I know the person and feel like answering or obviously if they are important.

The same goes for texting, although it's less of a problem that way.

I suspect it's more prevalent in some cultures than others (that's my experience at work)

Apparently, I'm not the only one, because there are several websites like this. I found out because I got an email from someone at work that had the link to one of them in his email signature. 1 I can't imagine that management would appreciate it and 2 Yes, he's in IT.

I'm not sure if this is the same thing as your situation but I have one person in my company that sends me texts with "Hi". And that's it. Later on, a follow up will come with an actual question or comment. I find it awkward when I get a one work text.

@masrum, i believe we work for the same company. I’ve started to see more and more folks having a message about no/hello in their status message. I’m a product manager for a high visibility project, massive numbers of folks reaching out. Very annoying to get a ‘Hi’. Naw. State what you want. We’re not here to have tea and discuss the weather. State what you need.

Exactly. Maybe that's where I saw it, status message in one of the chat clients.

At times, I may lead with the question. I usually realize that some folks may be irritated or feel slighted or something if you don't include the pleasantries, so I'll then follow up with some.

I see this frequently - it’s to see if you are actually there.
I’m not typing a long time sensitive question out if you aren’t going to see it.
I’ll make it someone else’s problem.

I used to work with a Production Designer who refused to accept your phone calls, He would text back "If you have any questions or concerns about the set or scene text me, don't call".

When I met with him I asked him why and he responded "I gain an hour to an hour and a half in lost time daily by not going through the BS pleasantries and gobbledygook. Texting gets right to the point and problems and questions get dealt with quickly and efficiently".

Most of the time (in my experience) it's a one-line or single sentence question. Sure, if it's a long complicated thing, I guess. Especially via text. At work it's usually a chat client. And I've typed out a question to a person via chat where I didn't feel reasonably certain that they were available, I then copy/paste that same chat into another or multiple other windows.

I dont have a cell but I hate when customers call and leave a messege and dont say what they want. I screen a majority of calls first so its really not helpfull when you have to call them back not knowing if its worth calling or not

At the workplace you just don't have the time to waste.
I once started a job with a new manager whose approach to me was to try to explain every situation and why something needed to be done. I appreciated his methodology but he was frequently interrupted by other demands upon his time. After about 15 minutes I said,"Bruce, can we pretend we've worked together for a few months? If you need me to do something, just tell me . If I need more information, I'll ask for it, but you don't have time to explain everything."
He thanked me and we got along great.

Around here most people say "Hi, how are you?" They are not actually wanting to know how I am. it's just a figure of speech. So I tend to reply, something like, "Hi, nice to see you." Or just "Hi."

I work with a guy that sends meeting invitations that have 2-3 word subjects and no text in the invitation to explain what the meeting is about. Drives me bonkers. I frequently skip his meetings. If you can't take a moment to type out a single sentence with a little bit of detail, then it must not be that important. He's a super nice guy, but this is just one of many things that he does that rub me the wrong way. I've even responded to his meeting invites (at least once, but probably 2 or 3 times) saying, "it would be very helpful if you put a little information about the invitation so attendees could make sure that they have any information that may be required for the meeting." (or something like that).

I have a friend who feels the same way about thank you’s. Have to say, they do fill up the inbox unnecessarily…

Have to wonder how much server space/momory is wasted on things like that…
