Things I do not understand

First off let me say, "To each is own".

Street take overs. Burning up engines, tires and running over each other. This seems like a rather stupid event, but hundreds of people show up and get involved.

Wire wheels that stick out 2 feet from the tire. What the Fu&k. Any purpose in this look?

Hydraulics in cars. I see these guys "jump" their cars and in some cases destroy the undercarriage. But other then that what purpose. Just looks??? Seems a waste of money. Does it increase the value of the car?

Thousands of people engage in the above behavior, so I must be the one off kilter.

Ice fishing. Sitting out on a frozen lake just waiting for a fish to bite? Nope I don't get it.

Fly fishing sure but ice fishing? Nope.

You have it all wrong, its ice drinking. Cold beer and schnaaps from the snow bank. Also there are 50k ice houses that rival most peoples living rooms.

The people I see are sitting out in the open on crates. Our ice never exceeds 8 inches so bringing a 50K ice house out on that is not advisable.

A lot of the fads that you talk about are completely based on aesthetics, and what took over was the desire to one-up the next guy by being more extreme.

The poke and stance crowd with their cars that have ridiculous negative camber so that they are practically running tires on the sidewalls or have in some cases inches of wheel sticking out past the tire bead on the outside. "I can be more extreme than you" and the most extreme "wins." That's the same with the trucks doing the Carolina squat, the "swangas" (silly wire wheels) in Texas/Houston, the kids with the crap stuck all over the outside of their cars (because they can't afford anything else).

Just look at the Japanese car scene where the cars look like something out of an anime cartoon. It's all about being the most extreme, most out-there.

I think some of this stuff may have started as a way to mimic some performance cars, but over time morphed into something that's more aesthetic than performance oriented. It's really not that much different than the guys that obsessively clean their cars in an effort to have the cleanest car (concours).

I think most of us on this site have aesthetics that we like, but we also like and probably prefer performance over looks, so we're far less likely to mod a car in a way that will adversely affect the performance of the car.

I also think that most folks want to be liked, and want to belong and the easiest way for a lot of folks to do that is to mimic the folks around them. So even if what everyone else is doing is silly, lots of folks will do silly stuff just to belong to that group.

Burnouts is something I think it stupid. And doing donuts on asphalt and burning up rear tires is beyond my understanding.

I don’t understand the piscatorial sports at all. I don’t get any pleasure out of trying to outsmart a fish under any circumstances. I cannot fathom what would motivate a man to try to outsmart a fish while sitting on a block of ice.

Come on! Goldfish swallowing, phone booth stuffing, car stuffing. Folks have always strived to find ways to be part of the 'different ' crowd.

As for cars with do nothing do dads, that is just varnishing turds.

Hey WD,
Come out to Oregon and I can put you on a jewel of a mountain stream. Sometimes 3-4 ft wide. With the prettiest fish going nuts for your fly. Some people even cut off the hook. It’s a way to connect with your hunter- gatherer genes.

Done it many times years ago....it's fun...unless it's windy, or they're not biting.
90% of those you see sitting on crates...have gas/propane heaters inside the crate. When you are sitting on a 100 degree seat, it's easy to stay warm.

Great for rainy on unbearably hot days (no shade on any local piers)

I've seen them do it. It sure does look like fun. Tire smoke filling the air. Teenage girls yelling and screaming with joy. Massive risk taking. Alcohol involved, the list goes on...

A lot of people do weird (in my book) things to their cars but my philosophy is that if they have a passion for their car and modify to their taste, I can only celebrate that continuation and diversity in car culture.

The things I don't understand could fill the San Andreas Fault.

I just watched a video on steam locomotion valve gear. I feel like a donkey staring at the new gate.
But I also don't understand why anyone would put truck nuts on the bumper. Is this how the bro's get the chicks these days?
