Chinese brands now command 76% share of global EV sales

An astonishing figure. Can Western manufacturers catch up?

It is a well-known fact that Chinese car manufacturers are leading the way when it comes to electric vehicles. They are now dominating EV sales globally, and they are doing this without selling a single car in the United States. This is a big thing considering the U.S.A. is the world’s second largest car market.

The reason for this massive success could be due to a couple of reasons. One is that many of the countries where these vehicles sell do not have a strong local car industry more so EVs, making it easier to dominate the market. Additionally, the Chinese EV industry has benefited from at least $231 billion in government subsidies and aid received from 2009 through the end of 2023. This in turn has allowed Chinese EVs and PHEVs to be more affordable. They also come with a plethora of features and tech that make them value for money.

Can you imagine if Reagan hadn't removed the solar panels Carter put on the White House roof? How'd that go for U.S. solar panel production?

Same same today.

The U.S. Government has firmly established a drill baby drill ICE future for the country.

We let China take the lead and gave them enough time to start building good quality EVs and something like 3 million charging stations. I think the U.S. has 5 charging stations. Forget tariffs, I just wouldn't allow Chinese EVs to be sold in the U.S.

Reducing oil consumption is a U.S. strategic national interest and makes us slaves to the whims of OPEC+ even as the U.S. pumps the most oil in the world.

My Rivian stock sucks. But I want to buy more. Waiting.

I listened to a report just this morning about the energy situation. It may be out of the government's hands.
Electric cars may be in for a rough patch though. There is a HUGE increase in the demand for electricity due to AI and huge data centers. Fossil fuel generating facilities take too long to build to meet the demand. Solar and other renewables come online faster, so there may well be a big increase in renewable power generation, but not enough electricity to power cars. They are expecting big increases in the cost of electricity. Glad I have my solar panels.

Meanwhile China is powering those EVs with coal. I was just in Korea, the amount of smog that blows in from China is horrible.

China also has the advantage of a LOT of IP theft, it has helped them leapfrog US and European companies in a number of industries. It would be interesting to see some of their EVs put through the same testing as US and European counterparts. How would they do in crash testing, or range testing in a controlled environment?

Exactly this!!! Don't buy the hype. China doesn't have the environmental or safety regulations that other countries enforce, and they have been allowed to operate like this since "ever." If they played by the same rules and played fair, how would they fare?
As far as the quality built into their vehicles, time will tell. As far as quality EVs that are built in the US, I can personally say that Kia builds a quality EV with the EV6 and EV9. I drive them every day.

Those cars were chosen by the manufacturer, I presume.

I would not trust the ChiComs to be honest brokers in anything. We need to quit subsidizing their junk and arrest all of out "public servants" that are in the bag for them, like Gavin Newsom and the Bidens.

(Another mentions 37 built by December. Or is it 1,100? Article is not well written.)

https://reason.com/2024/05/30/7-5-billion-in-government-cash-only-built-8-e-v-chargers-in-2-5-years/
"US drivers welcomed almost 1,100 new public, fast-charging stations in the second half of 2023, a 16% increase," Bloomberg's Kyle Stock reported in January. And not just in big cities or progressive enclaves: Deep-red Idaho "switched on 12 new [DCFCs] between July and December," while "Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee welcomed 56 new fast-charging stations in the second half of 2023, an infrastructure increase of one-third."

Another thing to remember is that China being 76% of the market isn't saying that most of the EV cars sold outside of China are Chinese made.
According to this site, this is the number of vehicles sold per country (top 10) in 2023.
https://www.factorywarrantylist.com/car-sales-by-country.html
China sold so many more cars than EVERYONE else, that just their sales alone are probably the majority. I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me if most of the EV sold in India were from China as well.
So the stats aren't as overwhelming as they seem.

Country - Cars Sold
China ------------- 30,094,767
United States ---- 15,604,278
Japan ------------ 4,779,639
India ------------- 4,108,263
Germany --------- 2,845,764
Brazil ------------- 2,309,243
United Kingdom - 1,905,522
France ----------- 1,776,921
Canada ---------- 1,664,327
Italy ------------- 1,568,623

WD is on to it. Data centers are gonna be influencing energy policy and the rest of us will suffer for it.

There is a data center proposed to be built in Lagrange, Georgia. I don't remember the details but I saw an article about it at work the other night.

Believe it or not, the Chinese consumers aren't stupid.
They buy the best product they can for the least amount of money.
"But now that market is a blood bath of competition from Chinese rivals. Chinese drivers that once flocked to Tesla are turning more and more to local brands that offer more efficient cars with better technology, sometimes at half the price.

Tesla’s biggest rival, the electric car giant BYD, sold 481,318 cars in the first two months of this year, over three quarters more than it did over the same period last year. Tesla sold 60,480 vehicles in the first two months of the year, a drop of 14 percent from last year."
"Younger buyers prefer Chinese brands, said Xia Lifang, an employee working at the nearby dealership for Arcfox, a Chinese electric carmaker. Tesla and BYD remain the most trusted brands in China, she said, but people born in the 1990s and 2000s are more open to trying new brands.

“Our car looks better than Tesla,” Ms. Xia said with a smile.

She added: “You could buy two of our cars for the price of one Tesla.”

Tesla , imo, got a pass on crappy interiors and awful dash interface due to the novelty of electric cars. The fun bits of an ev (instant torque, no gas stations) can be provided by any brand.

I totally agree for us old farts that are used to knobs and switches. I HATED the user interface in the Tesla Y. I assume the other Tesla models are as bad. But Generation Y, raised on video games, seem more amenable to them. Sadly, the video game ergonomics may be permanent.
I have yet to use an HVAC control system that is an improvement on the tried and true 3-knob system.

For better or worse, you're forced to relearn decades of muscle memory with a Tesla.

I don't mind it as I'm on my second one but my wife flat-out refuses to drive it because nothing is where she's used to it being and finds the entire experience stressful.

I’ve been traveling a lot in Europe lately and using Uber…

The Chinese EVs are nicer than the Tesla’s by a big margin… and cheaper.
