Yardwork.
Gah. I’m sore! Abs, arms, muscles I didn’t even know existed. Sore!
Beautiful day yesterday. I went jogging as usual and the dog and I took a new route. I stopped and let him Pee. He was peeing on some decorative grass. Just hoseing it down. ![]() Mine I haven’t touched since they were planted. Dead hardened blades, all over the place. I jogged home. I then washed the cars. All of them. The entire time I was side-eyeing my own decorative grass. It bit me. I took hand shears, crawled in there and started cleaning them up. The project ballooned. I filled a green bin entirely. There was snipping, there was yanking, deep knee bends, long squat sessions ( see recent squat thread). I had to take an Aleve to sleep. My arms were aching. I slept 9 hours!! This morning I jogged slowly and deliberately. Took my usual route without the gardeners doing excellent work. Too tired to take pics. I didn’t take a before pic anyways. I want to hire a gardener, big time. But that money would go to a house cleaner first ![]() Life is pretty good exercise!

The yard will take all the effort you can put into it.
Recently wife and I had 3 weeks where we filled 25 full green bins. Yard is in great shape again. Garden is a thing of beauty and a job forever. A couple Advil takes away most the pain. Trimming this big bird is like wrestling an octopus. ![]() ![]() |

We have a separation of duties in our yard. Wife is in charge of flowers, planters, trees, and vegetable garden. I am in charge of snow removal, general irrigation, lawn mow, trim, fertilize, and aerate. Next week the irrigation water gets turned on and I get busy. Lawn is just now greening up after spring fertilizer last week. Fortunately none of this involves a ton of crouching, digging, or heavy lifting so I don't get too hammered from the work. Game on!

This past Saturday was a good dry day with no wind, so I used it for raking my 1.25 acres. It wasn't covered, but there were pine cones, small twigs, and some leafs that needed raking before the first mowing.
I woke up Sunday am with a sore neck and unable to turn my head to the left. I'm sure it was from raking. Took many aspirin to get through the day and today it's mostly all better.

Still a bit early to do any real yard work here in MN.
My to do list for this year is to raise a few sprinkler heads and replant several areas of undesirable grasses. I also think I need to add a corner head on a side strip as it gets full sun and the head that serves it now just doesn’t get enough water there. The last few years, I paid a company to fertilize and mow my lawn. I’m been retired for almost two years now and decided I really should man up and start doing my lawn care again.

I religiously mowed our yard for 35 years. If I were to start doing it again I think my wife would have kittens. Our gardener just finished doing the yards this morning. Edge, mow 'n blow, done in less than 45 minutes if that. Yeah, I miss the 'instant gratification' of seeing a job well done and could probably put the money towards one of my hobbies instead of his pocket. I do enjoy not having to worry about it every week though.
Mower(s) is(are) still in the shed, along with the edger. What can I say, I love small engined power tools.

Right now I'm starting to spray/kill broad leaf weeds & unwanted grasses around here. I don't have a lawn to be mowed weekly, but I do have grasses that come up yearly that have to be cut, weedwhacked, etc. It's a big job, & I'm looking forward to it in a month or two. It's required for fire mitigation, & I'm happy I can still get the job done at my age. I really enjoy the looks of the place, except for the time when the grasses are long and brown from being dired out.

I just started my mandatory yard work. We have 2/3 of an acre on a pretty good slope.
Failure to do it to the satisfaction of the local Fire Department results in $1500 fine, and you still have to do it. That's lots of motivation to do it right. I took out the cordless hedge trimmer for the first time yesterday. It works great. I should have no trouble finishing by June 1st.

I live in a very rural area and there is no neighborhood watch for lawn upkeep around here....but I still enjoy creating a nice looking lawn. I have open unkept fields on the south and west side of my property....as far as one can see. This leads to a lot of wind carried seeds in my one acre yard.
When I bought the place it should have been called 'dandelion acres'...it was that bad. I purchased a pull behind electric yard sprayer and within 3 years I had the problem gone. Now I keep a one gal Bauer weed sprayer loaded and ready, and whenever I spot a dandelion or two it takes only a minute or so to snap a battery in to kill it. The lawn has really thickened up since. But the weeds are a never-ending problem with weed filled fields to the south and west.

I did my yard work last Saturday, and I wanted to get it knocked out before storms rolled in on Sunday. Lots of blooms are on the ground now after the rain we had and we have a trail of flowers.

Reminds me I need to hire an arborist this year to show me how to trim my berry bushes. 😁

Had almost an inch of snow yesterday. Gone now but it is currently 23 degrees here. Most miserable stretch of weather since December that I can recall. Feels like I have been stuck in the house for a year

It's that time of year. It always happens. Every winter I swear I'm not going to let myself get out of shape, but I always do. Then the sun comes out and I go out and abuse those muscles that have been sitting back drinking beer and watching TV for 4 months. Ibuprofen is my friend.

I just aerated my very wet clay soil lawn today. Rented one from HD. The single most difficult machine I have ever used. It was exhausting. What an incredibly poorly engineered machine. I didn't notice who made it. It was complete garbage.

Get off my lawn!
|
I edged and mowed yesterday. I have over 1/4 of a mile of edging and string trimming to do first. Then mow. And Mrs. Carrera insisted I bag it all, and dump it on the compost pile for additional bio-matter. It was my first mowing for the year. Lots of dead or in reality dormant Bermuda grass to be removed to get the new growth sunshine so it can grow and turn green, so I can mow it every week all summer.
If I hire it done, like when I am on vacation out of state, it is $75 per mowing. I am cheap, and I certainly can use the exercise.
