Moving To A New iPhone - Kind of A Pain
I replaced my battered iPhone 12 with an iPhone 15 Pro. Not the 16, because I never buy the latest iPhone. The camera button is not worth $500 more.
This must be the tenth time I’ve moved iPhones. Apple makes their part of it easy. Put the two phones next to each other and wait an hour. But some of the apps and services are a right pain. It took me 20 minutes to sign into Google, which kept demanding some passphrase I’d never set up. Less bad, but still irritating, were other apps. I also wanted to clear out some of the junk. Why does Facebook save every “chat” and “invite” I’ve ever received? I’m having to manually select and delete them going back to 2008. It is interesting seeing chats with dead people, but whatever - delete. Similarly for other social media. All in all, it’s been 36 hours since I moved phones, an unhealthy amount of which has been spent poking at the new phone, and I’m only just starting to get things working smoothly again. This really should be easier!

Sounds like someone needs to work on house cleaning more regularly instead of only doing it at "new phone" time.

I also found that if I delete and reinstall apps, that reduces the storage they consume. My new phone has 256GB so it’s hardly an issue, but I’m sure it will be eventually.

Most apps have a cache. By removing and reinstalling you are probably clearing the cache, but then once you start using them, that will probably build back up.

Yeah, the “System Data” on this new phone is 13GB - more than the OS. That drives me nuts. I guess the phone-to-phone transfer method moves over all the cruft, cache, uncollected garbage. I should have set up the new phone from an iCloud backup.

This is weird. Suddenly I have vmail messages going back to 2018. I played my wife a vmail from her late mother; she told me to not delete it.

Or, take the opportunity to start a new life! Keep the job, the family, the home but let the daily ephemera that you record on your phone build up organically! Imagine the possibilities! Every day you have dozens of new forks in the road that need to be negotiated, considered, reviewed. What you did yesterday may or may not be what you do today!
Who will you be in a years time? ![]()

Yep, I recently migrated from my iPhone 6S to the 15 Pro. They asked if I wanted to trade in the old one, I said it's a 6S, I doubt you want it. They gave me like $900 as trade in towards the 15 Pro. I couldn't believe it. Definitely a learning curve getting all the apps working with my personal setup choices.
In other news, these modern iphone Pro cameras are crazy good, even in low light. Like defying physics good.

BTW, Verizon will toss you all sorts of numbers for a "trade" but it comes in the form of a bill credit over 36 months. I swapped my dad's iPhone 8 for a 16 and they showed $900 trade in value.

I am stiil using my iPhone 11 pro. I bought a 256 GB verion back then. I am up to 143.95 GB of storage. 50 GB of that are the photos I have taken. I have every text message ever, even my first text to my long dead father. I guess not really all of them, the junk texts I do delete.
My battery life is less than ideal now, but it gets through a day with no issues. I will update maybe this year or next. No real hurry. I would like the improved camera capabilities. It still blows my mind how good the current camera is. As a professional photographer all my life, and mega tens of thousands of rolls of film used, it is a better camera that a Hasselblad. And yes, I carried a Hasselblad when I was in high school and used them for hundreds of weddings.

That's really crazy. I guess deleted doesn't mean deleted, it just means "saved by Apple for later" which in this case worked out for you in a way.

The other big gimmick is that you have to upgrade your plan to one of the higher unlimited plans which pretty much shoots any "trade value" you were allegedly receiving. Verizon told me I could upgrade to the 16 pro max for "FREE".... but I had to upgrade my $30/mo unlimited plan to their $55/mo unlimited ultimate plan. Wow! What a deal!!! Sign me up yesterday! A "free" phone for only $972 more in plan cost over the 36 months of bill credits!!

My wife wanted to upgrade her phone (i7) when she got one of those upgrade offers from tee mobil.
Since I live under a rock and could really care less if I have a phone other than my land line, I went along with her on it. She was out of town last week so I thought I'd find out just how hard can it be, so went in by myself during the week. I had an i7 also, so figured it'd be a good 'learning' experience for me and might save her some time when she got home and upgraded hers. 3 hours later I was walking out with a new 16e. My old phone wouldn't even upgrade the software to a high enough level where they could use their app on it to do the purchase. We bought our upgraded phones outright. I kept both old ones and see that they even work for texting even though they aren't 'phones' any more. There've been a few teething problems with some of her apps, but at least she didn't have to wait 3 hours for hers. It only took about 45 minutes to switch hers over. Now my biggest problem is I can't yet pair my phone to my car. I've paired both of them to hers though so she's happy. Me? I really don't think pairing it to my car is very high on my priority list so I'm good with it as is. Was it a pia to do? Yes, and no. My buddy back in KC MO is more than pleased I upgraded as he's been on my a$$ about getting a better phone for years now. He's a big Apple guy so is my personal help line for most things about it.

≠ ≥ ≤
Hey, all this futzing pays off, I learned how to do these symbols! Just do “<>” and it turns into “≠ “ and so on. Oh, everyone knows that . . . I guess I’m old.
