He protested saying the one I borrowed was on its last leg. I insisted on replacing it and he reluctantly accepted the new one. He later told me that, at the moment I gave him the new grinder, he knew what type of man, neighbor and friend I was. Another time, I borrowed his backhoe and the steering ram blew it’s seal and wouldn’t turn. I removed the ram and took it to a hydraulic shop and had it rebuilt. When I took the backhoe back, he noticed the new paint on the ram and just shook his head…said he had been nursing that seal for years with conditioner. I simply looked at it as the right thing to do…it worked when I got it and it had to work when I returned it.
When I was 18, I had a room at a house in exchange for babysitting and general house upkeep. Our mower was at the shop, so I was sent to the neighbors to borrow their mower. Lady said it was very hard to start. I got it started with many pulls and mowed until I needed a break; came back and it wouldn’t start... now I couldn’t bring a broken mower back and I had a done a lot of work to my 914, so had some mechanical knowledge and went through the basics and put a new plug in. Bingo, that thing started easily and every time.

I was so proud of myself and was beaming when I brought it back to the lady and showed her how easy it started. She wasn’t thrilled as she said she didn’t have an excuse now for not mowing and leaving the work to her husband!

So no good deed sort of in the opposite for that woman.

You may borrow my 94 F-150 anytime.

I lent it to my shop neighbor to haul some stones for a job and he brought it back and said I gotta tell you something and I apologize, it had 2,800 pounds in there. Rear wheel drive single cab long bed. How did nothing happen? Maybe it's because it's an XLT?

I gotta give John some props. I don't know if it'll start yet, but I poured some ATF in the bore and let it soak for 48 hours. Went out today and it turned over. I might have to look into the seal that might have caused the lean problem and snag one. I figure it's worth a few dollars to have a beater/loaner saw around if I can get it running again.

I learned a bit more about the cause. There's a crankshaft seal on both sides of the engine. Those seals ride in plastic case. As the plastic case gets warm it can cause a leak. As the engine gets hotter it can deform the case causing a permanent leak which causes hard starting and the engine not to idle. Again it probably boils down to lack of maintenance on my part in cleaning the saw.

About 30 years ago, one of our local drivers called in a panic : a pallet (45 cases) of 2l milk had not arrived on his shipment. A phone call found it was still on the dock in Halifax but they would load it onto a trailer which was coming to a depot halfway here. I figured I could take my Ranger pick up and bring it back in two loads. When I arrived the supervisor started passing cases in to me while I piled them as far forward as I could. When he stopped, I asked how many were left. He replied I had them all! 1800 lbs. I eased over to the nearest garage, aired up the tires to the max load and gingerly set out for the driver's location.
They made them tough back then.
