the canned Sardine. anyone?
anyone eat them? they are my backup lunch/dinner food. microwave some leftover brown rice, some broccoli and peel back the lid of a tin of quality sardines.. some chili crisp oil or hot sauce and BOOM...dinner time.
prices are definitely going up. my faves are Portuguese in origin. the ones I can readily find are Nuri brand. my old boss is going there for vacation and he asked me if he could bring me something. I asked for a random "locals only" can of sardines. he side-eyed me, which made me think it aint happening. (but I am covering for him while he is gone and they are demolishing a bridge over a major freeway - hahaha) google tells me they are super healthy. and a good source of all that is good for us. there are some great Japanese versions smothered in miso. |
I read something the other day about the health benefits of sardines. I like them ok, but anchovies on white bread are delicious. I hear both will put lead in your pencil.
|
Yes, my son and I both like them!
|
I used to snack on a can occasionally many years ago. Pepper only.
Now I'm thinking I should go buy some. |
I really like good canned sardines. One of my favorite quick dinners is spaghetti and sardines. Just cook the spaghetti, toss in some sardines, olive oil, garlic, a bit of anchovy paste, lemon juice, parsley, and some cheese, yum!

I prefer the tiny ones to the larger ones.
King Oscar sardines are good. https://www.kingoscar.com/wp-content...-FRONT-web.png I like these even more than the King Oscar, MW Polar smoked, Brisling sardines in olive oil. https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/...1000_QL80_.jpg |

Now I'm hungry!

My question is: why did the sardines lose their jobs?
Did they not stay long enough in schools? |

Canned sardines used to still have the guts in them I really liked them then. I prefer plain sardines on crackers. I was surprised to find out how large they were when I first ordered some in a restaurant in Portubal.

As for what to add, or take away, from the dish? That's the beauty of cooking. You're in charge. There is no right or wrong, except for liver, catfish, gizzards, and chicken feet. Those are always wrong. :P |
partner of mine loves canned fishes, i am not a fan.
|
The ones in Louisiana hot sauce are tasty .
|
|
^ those are the tastiest! They say canned sardines packed in olive oil are one of the healthiest things you can consume. When I plant my tomatoes I put 2 water packed sardines at the bottom
|
the canned Sardine. anyone?

They sort out the larger ones for sale fresh/frozen. The small ones end up in a can. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5f83947f0b.jpg |
Yep, love em! Eat them on a regular basis.
. |
King Oscar Kippered Herring for me.toasted bagel, cream cheese, and the Kippers on top go great with an easy-over egg for breakfast. Sardines in mustard on a saltine with a beer are OK on occasion.
|
My Danish girlfriend loved pickled herring (sardines are herring). She would put some pickled herring on a slice of rugbrot (not spelled correctly), which is a kind of paving material that passes for bread in Denmark, with a slice of onion and a slice of a boiled egg. I could handle it if I had a beer for a chaser.
|
I eat them. My wife makes me take them outside because of the smell. Therefore, they are a favorite on race weekends at the track.

Gotta have a solid, buttery cracker...

it's funny how things come and go in buying food. I used to get sardines often many years ago, Nuri was a favorite, spiced in olive oil on toasted sourdough with onions, sometimes tomato, sometimes jalepeno and sardines in olive oil with dill, cucumber and onion. Will have to get some now, found a new sourdough bread that should be good to try.
|
I don't anything from a can--literally nothing. I've never tried sardines, though I've smelled them when my wife's boys wanted to try them. Stunk the house up for hours--disgusting (to me).
Aren't they super salty? |

Have you ever tried these anchovies? They're not like your typical anchovies, they're meaty like sardines. They come in different flavors and also in just plain olive oil. I love canned seafood!

There's a lot of wisdom in that. I do my best to be an octopus.

I really like canned sardines but I love fresh and marinated sardines. A couple days ago in Florence: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1749732724.jpg

I've eaten sardines for a long time. Usually in mustard sauce, on saltines or Bremner wafers. Adding chopped red onion or shallots and/or capers is a bonus. Some of the stuff they can in Spain is another level above the usual grocery store brands, if you can find it.
Always have anchovies on hand, as I cook a lot of Italian food. The ones packed in salt are better than the ones packed in oil but are harder to find and require a little prep to use. No anchovy paste for me.... Better than all of that is locally smoked fish, especially salmon or trout. |

I don't eat them very often as my wife objects to the smell.
I do like them and I keep a few stashed in my hunting/fishing pack, my truck, my desk at work... I like the King Oscar and Tiny Tots. I have been branching out to a few others when I see them in the store. My son's fiance has been deer hunting with us. One rainy day this fall she was in my stand. When I went there the next day my sardines were eaten, but she did leave a nice note. She gifted me some canned cod livers a few weeks ago. The taste is OK, but the texture is gooey. I need to try something more than just eating them with a fork.... |
