Mattress costs

My wife is not happy with the current mattress and she’s shopping.
Does a quality queen mattress/box spring really cost $3,500 cdn?
It’s the only one she likes.
They won’t even deliver it for sanitary reasons, lol, but the only give they have is they will throw in 2 cushions.

Hi
I think mattress prices are often a complete con job.
Since their is no easy objective way to assess the quality of a mattress, people assume that a more/very expensive mattress must be much better.
Additionally if you go shopping with your significant other for a mattress, the salesman will often try and make you look like a cheapskate for not buying an expensive mattress !
Cheers

^^^Exactly.
She went into a Sleep Country and the salesperson was pushing hard and reduced the price twice hoping to get a sale even though she wasn’t keen on the mattress.

I met a guy in the last 6 months who owned a mattress store. He said markups were 2x I think? Whatever the figure, I was floored. It was shocking. That said, Mrs. LWJ and I just bought a new Saatva mattress two weeks ago. It seems to be very nice.

How much did you spend to save $3k?!

Maybe I am out of the loop on this.

Something like $700 or so. Very comfortable mattress. The stuff in the mattress stores was $3k and up easily. just ridiculous.

A good mattress topper with a medium priced mattress can be just as good as a $3K one.

I have a co-worker who sold mattresses for years. He recommends Sealey, Simmons Black, and Tempurpedic. I asked about Saatva, which I had purchased 2 years ago and he said they're good. Mine's good.

We have a basic king size Select Comfort we bought twenty some years ago. Separate bladders, no heat, cool or tilt, etc. In 2013 we opened it up to move it during a remodel and found mold. Called them on a Saturday, got a real human who spoke midwestern English and she looked up our mattress in their records and sent out replacements for every part that was effected. No questions asked. And apologized.

A metal frame and some upholstery. Yes, it's a rip off. Figure anywhere about 50-75% margin on those at tag price. They can move- a lot.

At Sleep Country, keep beating them till they are under 50% of listed price- they can do it.

Mattresses are a total rip off. Dont forget the Box Spring scam on top of the profit margin.

Y'all are rich! When I moved three years ago, I got my new mattresses off either Wayfair or Amazon. I spent around $200 for each. They're holding up just fine

I bought my queen size from a local furniture store. No idea of what brand it is...but it was about $200 also. Forget the box springs...don't need them.

Sleeps great.

I've got a Tempur-Pedic, two Nectar mattresses and now a Novilla Gel Memory Foam from Amazon. Three different price points and I can't tell much difference between them.

I just replaced the queen size in our travel trailer with an Amazon Basics memory foam for $200. I bought the 8 inch because the bed platform in the trailer is already tall. The thicker ones are a bit more money and I'm guessing a bit more comfortable. We may add a thin topper to it as it is pretty firm, but so far happy for the $'s spent.

I have a couple of friends who work for this company, Hastens. They make mattresses that sell for $40-80k. When I ask them how business is, the answer is that they are opening new stores like crazy. There are now 3 in LA alone, though the Palisades store is temporarily closed. (Duh).

I guess this is what happens when you give tax breaks to people who make 10s of millions of dollars a year, they literally don't know what to do with it:

On average you spend about a third of your life in bed.

How much is a couch?
Which do you use more?

Just a contrarian opinion…

We would up that to half when we joked about getting a mattress.
