Dead chicken, dead dog, much drama

Found a post on one of the local mountain FB groups today that has blown up into a huge debate that the read was fascinating.

Dude reports (anonymously, many FB sites allow this) that yesterday he sees a pitbull mix enter his yard on his ring camera, and then sees it again on his camera by his chicken coop. Proceeds to grab his spoon and head out to the coop where he finds the dog has broken through coop door and is proceeding to attack his chickens. The dog apparently was menacing him as he approached the coop, so he put a .44 slug in the dog. It killed one of his birds, injured a couple others that he reports will likely survive. He immediately called the Sherrif and Animal control to report what happened and make reports of the incident. AC took photos, his statement and removed the dog from the site.

It is completely legal to dispatch a dog killing livestock on your property up here. Dude lives in an area called Crystal Falls that is referred to as "Crystal Meth Falls" and "The Getto in the Meadow" due to its bad reputation and many shady residents. My chick lives in the area and there are dogs running free all over the place on a regular so this is not surprising in the least.

The support of the guy was running at a solid 5 to 1 in the post which had over a hundred replies in just a few hours. Dude posted photos of the dispatched dog in the coop, the chicken in its mouth and feathers everywhere. He also posted a shot of the collar with the tag turned away stating, "If this was your dog its remains can be collected at the Animal Control offices".

Gotta love this country livin'...

Hate to see a dead dog. But the guy was within his rights.

Let’s see if he’s still above ground in 6 months.

Not sure there’s any debate here, he did the right thing. If you care about your pets don’t let them roam freely.

Why do people post this?

If it was me, i would just have finished the task and moved on with life. Posting on the internet would not even remotely been on my mind

Agree, why invite trouble, and why post a photo of a dead dog.

I have to assume many of his neighbors heard a .44 being discharged on a weekend midday in a heavily populated area. I think he did the right thing by calling the authorities.

For those such as Red he was not being braggadocios, he was using it as a message to those who let their dogs roam. Infact, he said he never would have done such a thing, he has dogs, but seeing his beloved birds being killed made it an easy decision for him in that moment.

Discretely burring the dog might have gotten him taken to jail, right or wrong, no matter what side of the coop door you stand.

As I mention he posted anonymously, addressed that noting he did not want anybody coming to the house he, his wife and kids lived looking to exact revenge. He knew where the owners were due to the collar tag and may have known it could have led to further conflict he did not want.

It was a tricking situation with few right answers to be sure. Maybe more roaming dogs in CF are being contained tonight for everyone's safety.

You understand that FB anonymous isn’t, right? Any admin of that group can see who posted an anonymous screed.

Yes, I do. The admins of the particular site were very supportive of the one who posted immediately. I'd think the OP knew the site well enough to feel he would remain a John Doe.

I admin a couple of jeep sites, and I remove the anonymous FOR SALE ads and ban the AP right after they are reported.

I believe it's a California law that you can dispatch any non game critter that's threatening your livestock. But bald and golden eagles are a no no, they are federally protected. And iif you're in a city where you can't shoot a fire arm then better get yourself a crossbow. I have chickens and live in a city. I keep this handy just in case but haven't had to use it yet

Not a pleasant topic, for sure, but informative and valuable nonetheless. A lot of people do not know the laws governing nor the rights and responsibilities pertaining to situations like this. Sharing this information may save someone's pet, or may inform someone that they can save their chickens from someone's pet.
