What is this growing in my yard?

I had a tree in this place that was cut down in summer of 2023. The tree was healthy but in the way of other tree work (80 foot oak was not healthy and had to be removed). I dug around the stump and cut it below the surface and covered it with dirt.
Now, I now find these things growing. I was just mowing them but decided to let two of them grow to see what it is (there are others in the area of the photo). The pics are just a couple months growth. I never had these growing before the tree was cut down.

There is a bush about 10 feet away that grows like a weed. The bush is 8+ feet high and grows a couple feet each year:

Same bush? (if so, how do I stop it from growing without killing the existing bush?

Google says it's a Black Tupelo (also known as Black Gum or Sourgum), scientifically named Nyssa sylvatica.

What kind of tree did you cut down. If those are where the tree was, then I think that's sprouts out of the tree stump.

The tree was an Oak. Nothing like the what I'm seeing now. The leaves of the new plants look somewhat like the big bush but a totally different color. I would have expected the cut down tree to have one trunk coming up instead of a bushy cluster.

Can someone tell me what the bush I have at the end of my driveway is?

Holy crap I have those too! All coming out of existing tree roots, mostly where I cut them out. I used a shovel last night to pry them up, which mostly required me to chip them out of the roots.

That's a 'Burford' Holly, Joe.

To kill a plant that has been cut down and keep it from re-sprouting......this is what you want to use on it. Spray it on the stump where it was cut off and is now open tissue. Do not dilute (RTU = Ready To Use).

Triumph RTU Herbicide - 1 Quart (Replaces Tordon RTU)

Thanks Baz. Now is the new stuff growing also Burford Holly? If so, how do I get rid of it in the yard without killing the main bush?

Not sure what it is. I think someone mentioned the name. No matter - the product I referenced will kill it just the same. Shouldn't hurt the Holly if it's 10' away. Just confine your treatment to the target plant and you should be fine.

Yep, definitely not oak leaves!

Doesn't look like the same leaves, very different. Very interesting. It's not unusual for trees that have been cut down to have lots of sprouts come from the trunk. But if you cut down an oak, then those don't look like they are coming from the trunk of the oak to me.

Yup I've tried that. Also sprayed Roundup on where the stump was but it didn't do any good. Gonna have to let them grow or use the stuff Baz suggested.

It will kill whatever it touches, Matt.

Herbicides in this category are called "non-selective" BTW.

If your goal is to kill grass....I would use Roundup. Add a little dish detergent to help the product work better. Like a teaspoon per gallon - no more.

There are spreader-sticker products that are better than dish detergent but for homeowners dish detergent would work just fine.

There are also "Roundup" products that include this - not to complicate things.

Pretty sure that”s a variant of salal. It’s used in flower decorating and grows wild everywhere on Vancouver Island. People used to pick it for flower arrangements.

I had a liquid Amber tree removed. I had two years of annoying sprouting. The leaves looks different than the parent tree. I kept chasing roots and cutting them out. Eventually my OCD…okay determination prevailed. No more.

I honestly had less trouble from bamboo!

Baz:

I bought a quart bottle of Triumph RTU. I have 2 of these growths (now about 1.5-2 feet high) in the middle of lawn. They are a few feet away from each other. I want to kill them without killing the surrounding lawn.

Please let me know the best way to handle this:
-Do I spray the leaves on the growth (I can lay some plastic around the area to protect as much grass as possible -or- cut the growth off at the ground pour on the ground where they are growing up out?

-How long should it take before I see results?

Thanks for your help!

I hope it's "Tordon" you got instead of "Triumph", Joe.

If so, just cut the stem and apply the product to the fresh woody tissue. Do NOT apply to leaves, roots, and the ground around the target plant(s). Just to the freshly cut off stump, as shown in the video that should start at the 1:41 mark where she is applying it. I use a small spray bottle to apply it myself. Like you'd apply Windex with.

HTH!
