Dealing with a stump without having it ground out.
Last year, I had a tree taken down and asked them to cut it as close to the ground as possible. It was close to the fence line on the edge of a field, so I thought I would just drive over it with my JD. They left it about 6 inches high and impossible to drive over.
I decided to use Stump-Out. The stump measured 6' 7" in circumference. I had some 10" flashing that I cut to 7' long and made a small barrel around it. I used my Bauer 10" battery chain saw to score the top in multiple lines. Poured the Stump-Out in, added water, and let it set for 6 weeks. Last Wed., I added a couple layers of Kingsford to the top and 'lit er up'. It burned for 3 days and then rain came. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice!
Good thinking on using the fire to burn it out after you killed it.

Nice work!
Don’t be surprised, if you need to add additional dirt, as the stump decays. |

^^^ If it hadn't rained...I'm sure it would smoking and smoldering yet.
But I didn't need that...it did it's job. The fire left the outer bark...I think the heat couldn't get to it good. So I used my Bauer to cut that off...which went easy.

Thanks Yeah, I am kinda counting on that. At least I can mow over that area again. (after the grass seed takes off)

If you go the same route with the 'Stump-Out'....be aware that you might need two of them.
The one pound can doesn't go far.

Brilliant solution. I have a bunch of stumps at the family farm. Too bad I can't buy dynamite anymore...

^^^ Pmax
My place is on a hill and there are three lakes within a half mile and one is a mile long. Not much worry of fire here.

I know...I remember going with my G'pa to buy sticks when I was a kid. Buy them at the hardware in town...and then go to a shed in an isolated area to get the dyno. It was an easy way to clear a field.

I had a big tree removed from my yard recently. The removal service did the same thing only they drilled about a dozen holes deep into the stump and soaked it in diesel fuel for a couple days before adding the coals and lighting it.

I tried that with my 20V battery drill...it got very hot before I could even do one hole. The stump was about 200 feet from an outlet, so my corded drill was out. .

Anything that saves me from trimming around it is worth it. ![]() I use pramitol around each fence post, but to do that around the stump would make a large dead area.

Another option although slower is use Epsom salt . Drill some holes in top of stump . Pour the salt in the holes and on top of the stump . Cover with a pile of leaves . This method speeds up the natural decay/rot .

Before I used the stump out, I tried my sharpened axe to see if I could chip off enough of the outside top of the stump to give a gradual rise for the mower.
I don't do it often, but I know how to swing an axe. That dried surface of a few years dead elm is like concrete. If the axe doesn't hit it square...it just ricochets off. I gave up with that after a dozen swings. ![]() .
