Cayenne on a U-Haul Trailer

Hopefully you've figured out by now that if you are only going a short distance at relatively low speed, just put it on the trailer and go. I'm pretty anal about towing but you're over thinking this. U-Haul trailers are pretty over-built for the job.

That's exactly where any problem lies. The trailers are heavy and it just adds to the total load. One has to up-rate the towing vehicle just for the trailer and they don't know what you're going to put on it. I can imagine some of the bone head loads people have tried to get away with since the UH trailers are relatively cheap to rent. I wouldn't surprise me that a lot of construction equipment got a ride on a UH.

This brings back memories of the tow trip from hell my brother and I made many many years ago.
He was moving from the South Bay up to Santa Ynez and wanted to tow his '34 Ford Panel delivery up the coast to his new house. He only had an El Camino as a tow vehicle so, naturally, U-Haul wouldn't rent him a car trailer since it wasn't a 3/4 ton pickup truck.

We got a tow dolly instead.

What a fiasco THAT turned out to be.

Once we got the '34 on it, we headed out for SY via the freeway of course.

We were only 2-3 hours behind our planned on schedule.

Getting on the freeway, with a semi bearing down on us in the slow lane, the '34 decides to go into a tank slapper wobble since it didn't have any rear shocks and the extra motor in the back kind of added weight where we didn't really want it.

Once he got it slowed down and under control we knew were in for a L-O-N-G day, on surface streets no less.

All was going well with 45 mph being our top speed, to avoid the death wobble.

Up around that stretch of the 101 just north of Oxnard/Ventura where the 126 comes in and it's 3 lanes north and south, some guy drove by us waving his fist at us like we'd done something to piss him off.

When we got to SY, we found the muffler had fallen off some where along the way.

I bet I know where that happened. (I've looked for it on subsequent trips north, but never saw it laying by the side of the road.)

We finally made it after about 6, maybe 7, hours of driving.

We used the tow dolly to drag the '34 around a bit to get the engine going. It hadn't been run much since he rebuilt it and put it in.

It ran acceptably well, considering the sit time, although it was a tad loud due to the missing muffler.

I've used the U-Haul trailer to tow a Discovery 2. Those big things fit but you know they are behind you for sure.

My bad experience: last time I towed I got all the way to Houston and realized that the built in ratchet strap was not long enough to go over the tire and back into the ratchet mechanism. Highly recommend checking those. I had looked but not closely enough...

A 6 lug F150? Yikes, make sure those trailer surge brakes are working. When the victim is loaded on the trailer back the load up some and have someone watch the trailer axles. They wont lock up, but you will notice some scuffing of the light wheel on the dual axle.

Article about it, a Reddit post says they started delivery to locations end of April.

I’m thinking it’s galvanized steel, so it might not be lighter. Still, it looks better and carries a wider variety of vehicles. A much better track hauler.

I wonder if U-Haul provides the tie downs or you do?

That's a sweet trailer, their stuff is really well built. I wonder if they are going to be selling any of the old ones? Traditionally, they never sell anything. If a trailer gets wrecked, they use it for parts.

I should have said, they don't sell their trailers. They sell trucks.

Pretty sure they would have to provide the tie downs.

Update: U-Haul said my tow vehicle (2012 F-150 V8 2WD 8' bed) does not weigh enough to haul the Cayenne. I could do it with the Toy Hauler, but they are not available near me. They will not let me tow the Cayenne with the old style car hauler. I think the weight savings on the Toy Hauler makes the difference be tween 'okay' and 'not okay'.

I was on the fence about buying the Cayenne Turbo anyway, this made it easy for me. I'm going to look for V6 Cayenne closer to home.

I think U-Haul did me a favour.

It was in pretty good shape, but in hindsight, I'm glad it fell through. It was bound to be a big problem sooner or later.
