Exclamation Hurricane Season 2025

Stocked up on fuel.....generator has been serviced.......got a few window air conditioners that run on 110v.

Still plenty of work to do outside to better secure things.

I have been waiting. With the ocean temps, there should be a bunch of storms. Good you are prepared now. My recollection is that last year the storms went 0-100 VERY fast.

^^^ in ft and inches ... Fl barrier island right?

Be safe Baz ....

Even here ... the piedmont area can suffer with these storms.

With the recent temps ... it's likely to be a brutal storm season ... one nobody needs right now.

I'm hoping to be spared from any major hurricanes this year.

My neighborhood still hasn't recovered from the three we went through last year. There's still boarded up homes with no floors and sheetrock, The neighborhood docks are just now getting repaired and the boat ramp dredged. There's also a rash of houses for sale from hurricane weary owners eager to flee, resulting in prices tumbling 20% from just a couple years ago.

A year without massive damages is needed to restore people's faith in living here.

Hmm sounds like it may be time to buy in Bradenton!
Love that area! Our family has vacationed on AMI for 20 years, except for last year

Whole gulf coast of Fl. Even the high and dry properties are down.

A year or 3. Keys rebounded from Irma and Wilma.

I'm tempted to buy.

I'm on a dune ridge - higher than anyone else in my neighborhood.

Ironically......the stretch of roadway I'm on is lower than that north and south of me so it always floods during big rainstorms. I don't mind as it helps smooth out the right-of-way I left along the east side of my property for the mailman and/or other delivery drivers.

My ground level garage is off the side street so not affected. I've never had flood issues here. Unlike a lot of the neighborhoods on the mainland. My Mom's house for example needed all new flooring after Ian 3 years ago.

I always shake my head when people say they don't want to live on the barrier island because of hurricanes. Hell....this is THE place you want to be. I've hunkered down for every one since buying my place in '96. Of course my house was built in '62 and is concrete block with a metal roof so fairly stout.

The key is being able to generate electricity for yourself. If you can do that you're gold....

Wise words Baz. I was eager to see if my house was standing after Milton, and returned immediately after the hurricane passed. I should have waited. Five days with no electricity or water, just mosquitoes and heat, was miserable.

I've just recently had a generator plug installed and went out and bought my first new (to me) big boy generator from harbor freight. Before we got by with a 3000w inverter and just ran the fridge and bedroom AC and showered in the camper. This year we've decided we're done with that and just wanna plug in and not set up all the cords and such. I don't envy our fellow residents on the gulf side, last year was a whopper.

Good, sounds like you’re pretty well set. Dixie it sounds like maybe not as much. Hope it’s a benign season and y’all make out with no storms.

For a northerner I never saw hurricane damage until we stayed at my friends place in St. Pete’s this past April.
Gulfport had significant damage, the pier and casino were still off limits and boarded up.
A hotel/resort right on St. Pete Beach was boarded up when we were there.

Well, did you go out and get yourself something to avoid the same fate in the future? I suppose you could just leave town and travel somewhere that still had electricity, water, food, etc.

But I never liked the idea myself of leaving home. I don't like being dependent on stuff I can't control - especially when it comes to comfort and convenience.

So I have a decent setup here and can just hunker down if need be.

They make a bunch of different kinds and sizes of generators these days. Nice to keep the fridge going - maybe some fans - and a window AC unit.....

Even a small inverter generator like we used last year worked well but we obviously didn't have water or AC in the whole house. We slept fine though and didn't lose our food or ability to stay in the house. Mine cost about $400 secondhand and uses about 1 gallon/ 8-10 hrs. running a window unit, fridge and some lamps as needed.

There ya go - perfect.

I have a window AC that plugs in so just run a cord over to it.

I also have a larger BTU one I can use if the power stays off too long.

And lots of DVDs to watch on my TV for entertainment. Including several TV series I've never even watched before.

And a TV with a dedicated OTA antenna - so not reliant on cable.

Heck - even having a fan you can aim towards yourself helps a lot! I have plenty of those plus a cordless Ryobi fan.

I've got a 6500 watt portable gas generator that does a great job. Last year, I sort of inherited a little 2-cycle 400W mini generator. A friend borrowed it during Helene last year and powered his refrigerator and chest freezer. I'm looking forward to trying out my 1200W Eco-Flow lithium power bank this year. Got it and a large 125W solar charging panel for free! Should power our 2 refrigerators, fans and the TV with no problems if it works as advertised .... might not have to use the gas generator at all. We'll see I've also got a spare car battery with an inverter that is useful for charging phones and laptops and running a fan in the garage.

As someone who has always been fascinated with storms, I have to admit that I’ve always wanted to ride out a hurricane. With ample supplies of alcohol of course.

Its underrated. Lotta noise for one thing. Maybe a lotta dark if you have shutters up and no power.

It was only exciting the first time for Irma when I noticed water coming through a ceiling HVAC vent. Turns out rain was getting blown in through roof vents. Problem solved by going into attic and stuffing towels into the openings. Have whole house generator now, vent diverters, and very easy to close hurricane shutters so little prep needed now.
