I think tipping for new and different things is a good idea! Wouldn't you want to reward a member here if you got good advice, a great picture, or a funny remark?

I marvel at how many pre-calculated suggested tip percentages are wrong.
Sometimes it is bad math but many of them expect you to tip on the tax as well.

There is no way that I would pay this on the meal check.

Tell the team they need to get a real job with an employer that will pay them a decent wage so that they don't have to beg!

I was working a bar once at a volunteer benefit - pouring drinks and such. We were big donors to the event and they needed someone to help at the bar. I was done pouring something and turned my back and there was $3 on the counter! First and only tip ever received in my life! (except for “buy low, sell high”).
I was flabbergasted and it was really funny too. I saved the $3 - it’s in my counter downstairs. My wife and I joke about it from time time. Funny. Wayne |

It’s literally a switch on Shopify, not a cultural shift.

Like Rick Lee, I *hate* the tipping culture in the US, particular the over-the-top version that migrated in since COVID. I still tip the same way I did in 2019.
I do sometimes keep some small Starbucks gift cards or such with me when I fly, to give to the gate agent or purser or attendant, especially if I made it onto a flight I didn't think I was going to make. I often fly space-available on United and this kind of thing is good karma.

As a contractor for 50 years and a worker before that, I can count a few tips for my work. It's unusual for the company owner to receive tips even in the hair business. But these days I think that protocol is lost. I have had 2 tradesmen out just lately for very minor work. One was a garage spring adjustment which I can do and have done, but I thought I'd have the guy that installed it take a look and see if it was time (10 years) for a new one. Nope, he cranked it up and didn't want any fee. I sent him away with $150 and I had to run away from him to keep him from giving it back. You know who will be here at 10 pm when the thing breaks and I can't get in or out. The other guy go 100 just for time and gas, all he did was advise. |

I’m in the UK right now and there isn’t any tipping. Just a modest dine in charge. We even asked a couple of servers and they both said there’s no tipping.

Counterclockwise?

If you ordered 3 steering wheel covers would they have automatically added the tip to your bill?

No way in hell am I tipping 33% unless the wait person waited on me attentively for an hour and the bill was really cheap ($5 on $10-15 doesn't seem crazy). I am not willing to tip a tiny amount for someone that really worked just because the food is cheap.

Tipping for excellence service should be done but 33% is hwy robbery especially if they ask for it.
Our last big vacation was about 6 years in China and other parts of Asia. We were in Guilin. After a long day on the river boat, bike riding along the river to see the karst formation hills. We decided to eat at this restaurant within walking distance from our hotel, since my kids were scream with hunger. It was somewhat late, so we were thinking, why not since there weren't too many people in there. Communication was a challenge. We were able to speak with our hands and I noticed a bit of commotion behind the hallway. Comes this young man with a shove from the waiting staff. He was no more then 16 shaking like a leaf trying his hardest to serve us, bearly able to make a sound, handed us a menu in Chinese. He mustered a few words in English, the typical Hello, and welcome. He made use of his phone translator that day. I had to make him comfortable by lots of smiles and body language. He made his suggestions on the order, through this poorly written translator. I found out this was his summer job, and he walked 45 min to work daily and now its 9pm. He took one semester of beginning English last year and he got the big shove to come to us by the older staff. The 7 course meal was great and it was too damn much food for the four of us but hey, he recommended it. It was 40 US dollars. I paid the bill and decided to give this young man a good tip. I gave him 30 us dollars. He held it in his hand and he looked confused. As we started to leave, he came to us and handed us the 30 dollars. I told him it was for him and shoved it in his shirt pocket. I saw that big smile and it was worth all 30 dollars. I am told, back at the hotel, people in the rural areas make about 30-40 US a week. We walked out only to see all the other waiting staff trying to look at his money or maybe asking him to split it was my wife's thinking. That kid spend a few minutes with us ans kept coming back to fill our water or tea. Last edited by look 171; 09-16-2025 at 10:38 PM.. |

I haven't been to Guilin since about 2009. But even then it was a pretty touristy place, so tipping might be acceptable there. It is not acceptable in a lot of other parts of China, particularly those that don't see a lot of western tourists. Try that in the countryside and it's not good.
