^^^ Wow...that's a lot of alcohol in each mug!
Sounds like a fun time.....hope you're feeling better.

What Oktoberfest or Festbier has an alcohol content of 12-14%? To reach that it takes a heavy grain bill and high attenuation yeast strain. Festbier is typically golden in color and generally has 5-6% ABV. Marzen is a red to brown and generally has the same ABV as Festbier.

Sam Adams has my go to Octoberfest.

They were hawking this at the local grocery store yesterday, giving away free samples. Looked like it was $20 for a six pack, no thanks.

Sampling from our dinner party last night. Also had a bottle of Chimay for the second course.

$18.99 for a 12 pack at Chief or $17.00 at Walmart in Van Wert. $20 for a 6 pack? They were fishing for suckers.

Is that the Trappist Ale? We call it "monkey ale" because it tastes like bananas.

That's what I paid the for a few of the 4 packs for last night. The Celebrator was worth every penny of course. The Vermont IIPA was as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'll pay that and then some for some good brews. No way in hell I'd pay that for Sam A's Octoberfest. I paid $20 for an ounce of Notch while on the Island. Deeply disappointed.

I got the Premiere which is a Belgian double. It's sweet but definitely doesn't taste like bananas. I equate more with port than with beer.

Chimay Première

Brewed by Trappist monks. I think it's their blue label that has a banana flavor. A Belgian Double is always good. Nice and malty.

There are only 3 reasons I buy Sam Adams

1. Twelve pack for the local shop inspection station. All cars pass everytime
2. The hazy IPA isn't bad on a hot summer day.
3. Hazy IPA will clean bugs off your windshield surprisingly well. I don't think Autozone wants to require ID for windshield cleaner so I haven't tried to double market it.

I always bring my phone when buying new beers, rarely have regrets.

Shaun @ Tru6 09-21-2025 02:31 PM

Beer has gotten very expensive but I go to the cost per can for salvation. I am happy to pay $4-5 a can for great beer.

Their Boston Lager is my go to. I like it for a generic beer. Their Octoberfest is about as good as any I've had, and I've had a lot of them! When I say that, I mean for the money, their Octoberfest is really good vs some that cost a lot more.

I typically just look at IBUs. I try to look for grains or types of hops. I generally know what style of beer I like and the flavor profile that different hops add.

Remind me to invite you over when I brew. I make a solid Kolsch, a REALLY good coconut porter, and a rock solid Scotch Ale. At $4-$5 per can... I'll be rich!! :D
