JIS Screwdriver set

Yep, I'm a junkie...I'd made it to now with only a 1/4" JIS bit set, but just ordered this set. Only JIS tips in all the sizes, no slotted. Seems to be a discontinued set, only a few left. Thought somebody here might be interested, especially if you're tired of stripping screws in your Japanese cars, motorcycles, or appliances with your phillips screwdrivers.

MEGADORA-JIS-Screwdriver-6PCS-Set

Damn! Apologies for poor computer skills...just search above on amazon...should come up. Price a bit less than $65

(another edit) 5 minute video on why JIS vs. Phillips

I have the Vessel set and love them for my motorcycle and other things. I wish I had discovered them 50 years ago.

Umm, I'm embarrassed to say I've never heard of JIS screw drivers or screws. I thought I was pretty good to know the difference between a Philips #1 and a Philips #2.

Don't feel bad...you're far from alone. I was in the dark on this for a long time. Assuming you watched the video? What's crazy is that a JIS tipped screwdriver works very well in a Phillips headed screw, but a Phillips headed driver isn't a good fit in a JIS screw head.

(edit) The Megadora set I tried to link to is made by Vessel...

Thanks Paul. I'll bring my "read the details" glasses with me next time I'm at the toolshop and buy one or two JIS screwdrivers.

Vessel's Impacta series function like impact drivers. I have those in a #2 and #3 size.

I bet if you'd owned and worked on a Yamaha/Honda/Suzuki/Kawasaki back in the mid 70's you would have learned about JIS the minute you tried to take out any of the case screws. They were big and pretty soft-headed, and a phillips head screwdriver would roach them in a big hurry. But if you happened to have the correct screwdriver (unlikely!) you could easily remove them most of the time.

Two things I still have from 'back in the day' are an impact driver in a little tin case with 4 screwbits and the knowledge that I bought a few allen-head screw sets to replace the JIS screws in several of my Yamahas.

Exactly the same. I've still got my impact driver - and use it. Yeah, I remember, the cool thing to do back in the day was to replace with Allen - head screws.

I have the same set. Really a replacement set. The little steel ball which transfers the force actually sheared. I took the set back to Canadian Tire to see if they could source a replacement ball and the guy just handed me a new set.

The type that you had to whack with a hammer? That's what I had.

JIS screwdrivers feel like a cheat code when you learn about them and own something Japanese. I replaced the injectors on my Sentra SE-R last year and my JIS driver made easy work of screws that a Phillips would have rounded out in a minute.

Used my vessel JIS driver today. Cleaned the laser on a Blu Ray player. Works now. YAY!

Here's what I got when I thought I'd try taking a camera lens apart.

Now I use them on my RC trucks when needed.

Funny you should mention this.

A very good friend of mine who has done many restorations of 2nd Gen Honda Interceptors has a website devoted to these bikes with a ton of information and he also sells products to support repairs and tune up work.

His latest offering?

SS screw sets to replace the original JIS screws. Enough of each to replace all the originals per application. Incl. shipping $12, $12, and $15.

carburetor bowl screws

replacement screws for the diaphragm caps

the plenum-to-carb screws
