Please explain this weld fillet gage to me

I'm curious why some of the things are 2 small semi-circles and some are one single semi-circle.

For instance in this photo, you see one end has what appears to be a huge radius and says '7/8"' while the opposite end of the same leaf has 2 partial curves that say '1"'

And the back so you can see that some are one 90º arc while others are 2 smaller (60º?) arcs.


I would expect all of the measurements to be the same, either 1 90º arc or 2 smaller arcs instead of a mix and match.

It can be used to measure concave or convex filet weld profiles.. Its really a comparator.. you place it flat on the horizontal and vertical surfaces, and check weld leg length, and throat..

Right, but what I don't understand is this. THese are the two ends of the same leaf. Do they measure 2 different things?

Yes one end measures the leg, the other the throat...leaves room for interpolation.. The video is a pretty good demonstration of their use... The last pic you attached you can check throat on a 1" filet, and leg on a 7/8" filet.

These gauges are only suitable for filet welds...other gauges are available are used for butt welds etc..

With this you can check leg and throat of 5/8 or 1/4" filets

Also I think when they were developing the tool, the amount of real estate was fixed so

some of the larger sizes are mixed and matched..

II retired 4 years ago, and stashed all my equipment and odd and ends tools away in a closet...

I just pulled out my go-bag with weld test equip..

Filet gauge and multi gauge...I probably got my filet gauge around 1985, the other in the '90s

The multi gauge allows measurements of all types of weld, and give direct measurements, instead of allowing interpolation
