Taking the grandiose scenery and filmaking out of the equation, this movie could have been mistaken for any other average director.

I don't expect the same thing from a great director in every movie he makes. Some are going to be better than others, too. Do you have an example of the past relationships to post?

Yes, a few posts back: Elisa and the monster in Shape of Water and Ofelia and the faun in Pan's Labrinth.

Making Frankenstein was his life's ambition so I expected it to reflect that.

Watched it last night. I kinda liked it. The movie was interesting and entertaining up until the explosion of the castle, 2/3. The last third was over played and campy. We needed more of the old man and the monster, less of everything else. It could have been 30 minutes shorter as well.

Different stories. Different relationships. I think Del Toro gave a gothic horror novel the best interpretation to date. Personally, I like sci-fi and horror. I enjoyed the fact that the villian was the creator and the sympathetic character was the creature. Elordi spent 10 hours per day in makeup.

Brilliant character development from del Toro in days gone by

I remember watching, Flesh of Frankenstein, #15, when it came out in the mid 70s. I recall it was gory, and one guy ran out of the theater retching. The movie was awful.

One of the better ones; "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" (1994) with Robert De Niro as The Creature.

I dunno. It was entertaining I guess. 1/2 way through it turned into a Tim Burton production.

Steve Carlton 11-11-2025 02:18 PM

I thought it got better and better all the way to the end. I felt a lot of empathy for the creature, which isn't the usual Frankenstein movie path.

It took me two sittings to get through the film. It was enjoyable but I agree that it lacked the magic that the others had.
