Zombie apocalypse comms
In case of a zombie apocalypse, which form of communication would you prefer?
Cell phones would be out. Satellite? UF, uhf, vhf, ??? What if smart zombies with jammer and locators? 😉 Just curious what to give for Xmas gifts.

Assuming this is a post zombie contagion scenario
then I’d say you would want some variety of line of sight portable radios for local communications, with a powerful base station radio and a big ass antenna. Satellites would still be there, but with nobody to man the ground stations they would eventually go silent. Obviously cellular as well. While I don’t worry about zombies, I do worry about how to reach loved ones in the event of a terrorist attack, EMP, or cyber attack that causes a widespread outage. Especially with a daughter going to college in Oklahoma.

I'm thinking that you need 1) two-way radios and 2) a ham/shortwave radio setup.

Satellite phones need a ground station. The signal goes from your satellite phone to the satellite, satellite to a ground station, then the ground station routes the signal to the terrestrial network through the Internet so you can tell your wife hi from the Amazon.
If there’s no electricity for the ground station or no internet because the zombies ate the maintenance people, there’s no satellite phone service. You can run a ham radio off of a 12V car battery and get big range across UHF, VHF, and HF. That would let you talk to just about anybody.

I just want to know where the people in every zombie movie get their batteries. Flashlights working fine for years is something I want. That and gasoline supplies for the vehicles years after the apocalypse. Most gas goes bad in 6 to 12 moths or so in the real world of today.
And electricity is still working for many forts! I worry about the zombie apocalypse almost as as I worry about the rapture, or bigfoot riding a unicorn in a mass attack of humans.

My understanding is that electricity is earth's outie toroidal flow, and magnetism is earth's innie toroidal flow.
By connecting a rod in the ether, you ground the atmosphere to the earth. But instead of a push, lightning/electricity, there's a pull, magnetism. Add in some liquid mercury and fascinating things start to happen. So round up some old thermometers to power a radio. ![]() Too bad they're all gone.

There are lots of battery banks and solar chargers on Amazon if you want to spend a little money. Or get a voltage inverter to run it off of a 12V battery.

If the conspiracy theories are true, old school comms will be the only ones available.

Zombies aren’t coming. Far more likely to live in a snow ball earth from various situations.

Zombies definitely exist, I just don’t think they typically eat brains. Ironically nor do they have them. But if you prepare for zombies, you’ll be prepared when the riots start too.

Well in 1938 the local power company in Southern California thought Amateur Radio (HAM) was the solution.
https://w6sce.org/about-w6sce The flood that disrupted communications, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles_flood_of_1938 We have come a long way since 1938, a lot of options now, I like having HAM equipment and knowing how to use it. More realistic is the "Big One" Earthquake, most/all communications will be disrupted due to overload, but the radio will work, since so few use it anymore..
