Another ethical dilemma
I've been trying to sell some 356 parts for a year. It's finally come down to I HAVE to get rid of it. I pulled out some wheels, a gas tank, some gauges, and put an ad on Facebook Marketing offering the rest of the stuff for free:
"First come, first served, pickup between 10AM and 2PM Saturday. The scrapper comes at 2PM for anything that's left." I got 4 or 5 responses within 10 minutes, most people want to pick it up at a time of their convenience. A couple of people said they can be there at 10, one guy wanted me to hold it all so he could come look at it at 11. One guy offered to PayPal me $100 to buy it sight unseen, and asked if I had any other parts. This was turning into a fk'in pain in the ass fiasco as I was beginning to regret not just sending it all to scrap. I took the guy up on the $100. I told the 2 confirms that it wasn't available anymore, and shut the ad down. I feel kinda bad about it, but if those people wanted these parts, they could have answered any of the ads I've been running for the past 6 months. The guy with the $100 is going to buy the wheels and other stuff too, so this is turning into a $500 deal. But I still feel bad about getting those people's hopes up and then cutting them off. I wasn't running an auction, but it turned into one anyway. It's not like it's a pile of gold, mostly just junk, but worth $100 any day.

Integrity always comes with introspection. IMHO you're good to go on with no cause to feel guilty.

On another note, I've been trying to sell this stupid LG indiction stove. I hate it, but not so much that I'll give the stove away and get another one. I paid $1200 plus tax for it. I'm asking $950. It's two months old.
One person asked if I would sell it for any less. I said no and thanked them for their response. They came back and offered me $800. Again, I thanked them. Then they told me Home Depot had them on sale for $1000 and free delivery on Black Friday. I checked, Home Depot has them on sale for $1098 and free delivery on Black Friday, not $1000. When I told them $1000 was a great deal, and they should take it, they got pushy and told me I was being unreasonable and if I ever wanted to sell the stove blah, blah, blah. I don't know why they couldn't just let it go. I know how much of a financial hit I'm willing to take to get rid of the annoyance of using this stove. Selling it at $800 would push me beyond that price. The other response I got was someone whose signature is some squiggle that looks like Arabic or something. Their message was "200." That's all it said. I responded, " . " They wrote back, " ," People suck, and I'm a person.

Not an ethical dilemma. Nice you got some cash for the parts. The market is very very soft right now. I have seen dirtbikes (where I prowl on FBMP) plummet in price recently.

You might reconsider the $800 CASH offer, and chalk it up to a small but costly mistake.
Call them back, small apology bad timing, no groveling or counter offers, how soon can they get it because you are considering other things. You move it outside with help. (No strangers inside. Don't trust knucklheads to not put a divot in the cabinets. Cause they will.) You bought it and that choice was incorrect. As time goes on the value will go down faster than your patience and faith in humanity and heart condition. Keeping it permanently would be better value then. But you want the right stove now and that also equals money. Because you deserve the right stove. Moving large objects requires a trailer or delivery truck to get it there without risk of damage. Most people can't do that logistically. At the store I was looking at a $400 freezer but there was a ~$300 delivery charge on ~5 miles.. A few hours two men and some gas. Times are getting tight and less people are buying new stuff. Aircraft, boats, RVs, second homes are always the first to go. Another idea would be to donate it to charity as a write-off closer to that $1300. Habitat for Humanity or whatever. Helping poor people without stoves. They pick up. Less return but more sanity. Another option.

People do suck. You did everything and more to try and be fair. Quit beating yourself up.
When I sold my 356, after dealing with WAY to many weirdos from FBMP and the 356 registry, I had a semi local guy in Montana interested and a guy in CA who wanted to buy it sight unseen. He talked me down $2,500 with the usual, what's your bottom line BS. We had a "deal" for him to be backup but I told him the Montana guy will see it first. He had called first. The Montana guy bought it for the same price I agreed to with the CA guy. Once the CA guy found out it was sold he was pissed I didn't come back to him to let him outbid the Montana guy from the price he negotiated me down to. I am not running an auction was my response. Asshat.

The older I get I'd rather just keep stuff instead of trying to sell it.
Anyone want to buy a Carrera front brake cooling system? lol I'd definitely take the $800 for the stove. Unless I'm buying something for 1/2 price or less I'd rather get new with no history.

I friend of mine had an old stove he put out for fall pickup because he just didn't have time to deal with it. It was too heavy for the municipal pick up regulations so it was still there that evening. He figured he would take it to the scrap yard on the weekend but next day when he got home, it was gone. He asked his wife if she knew where it went and she told him a couple of guys stopped by and knocked on the door to ask the price of the stove. She said$200. They paid her and loaded it. Problem solved.

I wouldn’t let the 356 parts keep me up at night. Especially for free parts, you’re picking it up on MY schedule, not yours. And if someone offers to pay me for the free parts, I’m 100% taking the money. It’s not like you had someone coming and pulled the rug out at the last minute.

So I'm looking at having to get rid of my old tv and receiver since I upgraded to new ones over the weekend.
The tv isn't perfect, it has a line of LED's that don't change color with the picture. It's only noticeable when the picture itself is light colored as the 'line' is green. The red line goes away when it warms up, but I suspect it'll stay after some more use. I probably should have had the Geek Squad deliver and take the old one, but it had too much sentimental value. My daughter gave it to me back in 2007 or so. The receiver works but I can't seem to find the remote now. I have the manual for it. I have some speakers which I'll throw in to the mix to make it a complete home theater system. I don't do F---book. How should I advertise it? C-List it?

Scott, we live in a world where you can get a nice 65” TV for about $300. I would just donate that thing and be happy.

WD, if it makes you feel any better I tossed my original OEM Porsche hood ornament after a post broke off, plus the original starter motor after swapping to an aftermarket reduction gear.
Que cera cera. Life goes on.

I'm in a similar situation- stuff too good to throw out, but not worth a hassle, especially if given away free.
So maybe I'll do this. "Item is sitting under my mailbox for free. Come get it. Rule #1. First person to take it, gets it. If it's gone, you missed it. If I notice it gone, I will remove the listing. Rule #2: No whining- If you get here and you missed it, tough. You didn't want it when you had the chance but the time has come to let it go. Frankly, I don't want to deal with it OR you. Rule #3: I will not respond to any questions or emails. Good luck. May the odds be in your favor." Last edited by LEAKYSEALS951; 11-17-2025 at 12:27 PM.. |

The $100 in your account counts as FCFS. All good. If electrons travel faster than cars, too bad.
Money talks, simple as that. I think I'll hold on to that trick. |

Taking this discussion to its logical conclusion means:
You put something up for sale because you want it gone in exchange for $X. Buyer wants the thing and will pay $X. Either the parties negotiate and eventually agree or you put the stuff on the curb ‘FREE’. Anything else is static on the wavelengths of your lives. I have recently resorted initially to the ‘Free’-by-the-curb and fhagetaboutit plan. Worse thing is they usually take the ‘Free’ sign, too. Lesson learned. |
