Those of us who survived were lucky
(edit) I didn't really know how dangerous my GTOs were, until I drove my first Porsche...but then, the Porsche taught me about trailing throttle oversteer..

A friend had a new '85-'87ish Targa and let me drive it. I tested the trailing oversteer rumor on a very wide curve in the road. It snapped around in a 180 smart and quick!
I'd like to hear more about your GTOs, Patrick! I'd love to have a '64.

I haven't seen something like this before. I had a 2018 Challenger, but it wouldn't do that.

My GTO's? I had a '65 with the 4 bbl. carb, traded it in on a '66 tri power. Both had brutal torque..and both could reach in indicated 120+ MPH. 1/4 mile in the 13-14 seconds range. This on relatively skinny bias ply tires...inside the 14" wheels were 13" drum brakes that were barely adequate for the lower powered Tempest model that the GTO was based on. Slow worm gear steering, soft springing with no sway bars. Yep, dangerous....But Gawddamn, were they FUN!
Yes, looking back, guess I was lucky to have survived....

Yes indeed, looking back you might wonder how people survived. In reality from my recollection most crashes were not the top of the horsepower mountain kings, but lesser cars that people could afford. I was reminded early this month that a neighbor's son went off the road and was killed in a '56 Chev Belaire. There were a number of guys in our neighborhood that worked their way up to cars such as the 390 Fairlane, 400 GTO, 327 Camaro and 383 Roadrunner.
I remember Archie, on his return from work would stop at the gas station across the river and gas up his 340 Dart. He would drive up to the next bridge and practice his race start. The surface had a lot of tar, making it fairly sticky and he had almost a 1/4 mile before the corner. I got a lesson in horsepower and suspension when our scout master demonstrated how his 383 Roadrunner could hit 100 mph from his driveway to the corner. That thing got stupid light on the rear end when he backed off. No wonder I gravitated towards European vehicles.
