So this is relevant to me, especially today.

My father and I weren't close. He had no interest in my hobbies or interests and never made an effort to share his with me. C'est la vie.

My son and I bond over cars, amongst other things. I didn't blanche when he wanted a BMW 3-series for his first car but when he had his heart set on a 2020 instead of an older model, we discussed the car, what I had budgeted, etc. and came to an agreement.

He's done the usual things kids do these days. Intake, down pipe, wrapped roof, etc. His car got hit in the school parking lot, I negotiated with the other dad and got him cash for the repair. He jumped at the opportunity to change the bumper to an M-Sport version. He found an aftermarket bumper, arranged to have it painted, etc.

Last night I was thinking about it and reminded him that he needed to make sure the paint cured properly before installing it and he took the opportunity to tell me that he loved cars and gets so excited about each mod. And thanked me for helping him to enjoy the hobby.

^^^similar. I introduced my son to two things that I thought he would enjoy that have given much to me: fly fishing and playing music. It was too early for both. He had zero interest when I introduced these to him. Fast forward to today (over a decade!!!) and he is a passable guitar player and a rabid fly fisher.

We went fishing just a week ago. It was a total debacle. Caught nothing. Almost fell down a cliff. Laughed all the way home.

As a husband of a woman obsessed with horses - get an e-Bike.
We're only 2 years into this journey, and that horse is such a time suck that there's a lot of stuff going undone here.

There's a 13 year old girl who comes to the barn just about every night to ride. She's leasing a horse from another girl, 25, who now owns 3 horses and teaches lessons on the side. The lease would be a good option to see if it is something that all of you want to continue doing.

As far as breeds go, while there are some tendencies associated with some breeds, I think it's more the individual horse than the breed that matters. Most barns around here have quarter horses, and while some are annoying to be around, most are like big dogs.

That's my parenting advice. Get a dog. They're easier to train, they'll eat anything, and if you don't like them, you can take them to the pound and get another one - or not. Try that with a kid.

I'll play along!!

you should toughen up those kids and make them get a job, like...

you know when I was their age, I had three paper routes, just so I could buy leather NIKE shoes that Gabe Duncan had, and he got them from his dad because his parents are divorced and Mr Duncan wanted to show Gabe he loved him despite his new family with his much younger wife, and three new kids....

No - you paid heavily up front for those. I’m talking true rent-a-brat for those times you wonder if you missed out on something.

You can pay someone to cry at your funeral, but you can’t put a price on peace and quiet on demand.

Since I have no kids, I am a 100% expert on knowing how kids should be raised and treated!

Just what do you want to know?

not at all.

i'm not a fan of all the fake punny threads in the first place - to me they show a failing in the humor bones of the poor sad saps that have to make them to feel better about their lives - but rather than throw my toys out of the crib i figured i'd play along.

that better?

Mebbe this thread was really asking about parenting advice Alan? Not about kids, or you either .... but the reference was certainly about your thread... and your reaction to others' posts.

Just like this one...

Yep ... I still need parenting advice...

E-bike for the win!

We owned horses for 15 years and I enjoyed them but... They get fed twice a day, stall cleaned daily, exercise daily, fresh shoes, vet visits, colic, oh my! You have to care for them like children every day whether you ride them or not. Want to go on vacation for two weeks? You need a daily horse sitter you trust. That is a deep commitment.

Beat them. Early and often. Preferably, in sports or chess.
