I’m curious, what’s a long day behind the wheel for you?

I’ve had some long days behind the wheel recently including a marathon 17 hour drive home from Moab 2 weeks ago and today’s 10.5 hour drive to The Pas, Manitoba enroute to Churchill, Mb.





Today, I had good winter driving conditions most of the way. That gravel highway through the bush at dark was interesting… one whitetail nearly ruined my week but decided to turn just before she hopped in front of me.

What's the heck is up in Churchill or Northern Mb? It must be for work?

I use to do 10-12 hour days straight up to Oregon from LA in the winter. It was exciting getting through the pass in knee deep snow through hwy 5.

I could do 10-12 hour drives, but nowadays, a long drive is 5-6 for me. I just haven’t needed to go anywhere long distance.

In my 911, I have done several dozen 12 hour days. My wife has ridden with me on many, and we have done 5,000 mile two week trips.

I know if I head west on I-40 from my house it is 911 miles to the hotel I like in Flagstaff, AZ.

If I head east on I-40 to Marysville, TN it is 914 miles to the hotel I like, just outside the Tail of the dragon.

After 41 states, Canada and California 4 different times, road trips are easy. I usually shut it down after 12 hours or so.

Anytime it takes over a tankful of gas.
I can go 400 miles on one tank.

Yup, going to evaluate the port / rail terminal for some critical shipments we have planned.

The polar bears should be all out on the ice now… I hope so, I didn’t bring any spoons.

Where in Canada have you been? It’s a pretty big country (bigger than the US).

I am so jealous. I want to see Churchill and the polar bears. I haven't driven that far north where its just sliding on a sheet of ice. Driven through areas of BC and Alta. in many winters. Its a difference driving experience in areas like that. You take your personally truck? Studd tires needed?

I would agree that 10-12 hours would be a long drive for me too. In my youth, I did several 24 hour slogs- not the smartest thing anymore.

Even if I haven’t been driving for 24 hours, any all night drive after being awake all day is too much; the wildlife crossing the roads, the oncoming headlights in your eyes, just makes for a sketchy drive.

Now days, 8-10 hours and I like to stop and enjoy a warm meal. Fast food and a cup of coffee while driving just aint cuttin it no mo

I once landed in Richmond at 9pm, decided to rent a car and drive to Niagara Falls through Philly (thinking breakfast there). It poured all night. Got to Philly, had breakfast, rested for a couple hours and decided to press on to save money on hotel. I had to pull over to get some shut eye around 11am upon a rest area only to wake up in the dark. I was beat. Never again.

The one thing I must say, the rest areas are so much nicer then we have here in the west coast especially in CA.

Our Pacifica gets 580 on 18 gallons if we are just highway cruising. Our last long road trip was 3400 miles over a couple weeks. Stopped at a bunch of National Parks/Historic places so we drove 2-4 hours at a time.

We once drove home from Emporia KS to SW WI on a tank. Stopped in Newton for Supper.

For us a long road trip is at least two days.

Drove from Texas to California in a U haul truck.

Due to some sort of rift in space/time,it took almost 4 days and somehow appeared to cover eleventy billion miles

Seriously though, U haul is not good

A guy I used to work with drove a Pacifica....they are nice rides.

My Honda has a 10 gal tank...40 mpg. But it is only comfortable for 2 or 3 persons.

I can do one long day - 9 - 12 hours, but then I need a day or two to recover. I made the drive from La Crosse to Mid Ohio a couple of times, that's about 9 1/2 hours depending on Chicago traffic.

I'm planning a 4000 mile trip this spring, hoping to do it in 16 days with no more than 5 or 6 hours of driving any day.

We did a honeymoon trip to Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts. I cut a day our of stay in Boston to add an extra day to driving back.

Oh, and as far as driving without stopping, the wife has to stop every 2 - 3 hours, negating any range advantage of the vehicle.

Not very far into Canada, but across the border!

We only made it up to Frelighsburg to the Apple Cider Wine place, Pinnacle I think. 1,650 miles or so from home. We spent a week getting there and hit all of the New England states, even into northern Maine, and Acadia national Park.

We toured the facility, bought some Apple Cider wine, and then went to a local French restaurant the winery recommended.

My "rule" to say I have visited a state (or Canada) is that I have to be there long enough to see some site, and eat at a restaurant, and use the restroom.

Like getting into the UP of Michigan, we drove across the bridge, and along the interstate for 20 miles, and then headed back south to our hotel in Traverse, MI. Not a real visit as we did not see anything but lots of trees, and no restroom stop, but we spent a week in Michigan. Mackinac Island is really cool, and the buffet at the Grand Hotel is something to behold. Just astonishing.

I haven't had a road trip in a while. In March, I drove to Dallas. It was ~275 miles and 4 hours. It wasn't a long drive. It's probably been ~15 years since I made a long drive, 550 miles in about 8.5-9 hours because of the wife and dog along for the ride. I'd previously made the same drive by myself in the 911 in closer to 7 hours. The longest drive that I ever made was 1000 miles and took about 17 hours because I stopped and took a 3 hour nap in the middle of the drive.

I am generally more concerned with getting to my destination and minimizing travel time. I suppose if I were to plan a road trip, where the trip was the destination and I took interesting routes, that would be different, but I've never done that.
