Sad thing is, I've got one very close. There will not be a dry eye in the house. What a dog she has been.

I typically don't look off topic, but this thread grabbed at my heart. My dog Pete became very ill Thursday night. He was projectile vomiting. I brought him to the vet at 7:00 a.m. Friday. They wathced him, gave him meds, and got his stomach calmed down. My wife picked Pete up at about 4:00 Friday evening. Well, he would not eat and he went RAPIDLY downhill over night. I brought him in this morning again and they are doing exploratory surgery in a couple hours from now.

The reason this is so upsetting is that I had to put our beloved eight year old dog Emma down just over a year ago when she was suferring from very similar symptoms. Emma was never healthy having struggled with a serious bout with Parvo before we adopted her from a pet rescue.

Pete, however, has never been ill. He is young, strong, active, and healthy.

Please say a prayer for our dog Pete.

Sorry to hear this. It's like losing a child for christ sake. They don't ever live long enough. The good thing is that we can put them down when the quality of life decays to a point that they are miserable. I wish we could have done that for my mother last month, she suffered so much it was unbearable for all of us.

MOMO3.2 03-17-2007 03:43 PM

YES!

Thanks to everyone for the positive vibes. Pete just got out of surgery. He literally had a cork stuck in his small intestines. The odd part is, we have not had wine at this house since Thanksgiving...

Again, the news is great! Thank you all.

Mike

targa911S 03-17-2007 03:47 PM

A CORK!!!! WHat a hoot! Glad he's OK. Give him a hug from all of us here in the frozen tundra. Henry and Buddy are rolling their eyes and laughing.

MOMO3.2 03-17-2007 03:48 PM

I was trying to remember if I had used a cork on the Porsche and that maybe that is where Pete found it.

Eventually, I realized I was confusing my self with Anthony Hopkins' character in The World's Fastest Indian--doh!

I must be getting old.

Mike

widgeon13 03-17-2007 04:06 PM

Days like that can make you old, great news.

notfarnow 03-17-2007 04:31 PM

Great news!

Wow, that's two pelican dogs that pulled through form pretty serious illness. targa911S' Henry pulled through last year, and now Pete.

scottmandue 03-17-2007 04:37 PM

Great news, I will hoist a St Pat toast to Pete as soon as I get home from work.

Not my dog:

Great news about Pete (he is VERY cute BTW)...

I often wonder whether I'll be rushing our little "darling" off to the vet for something similar - she always seems to have something in her mouth she shouldn't. Even though I pick up anything I find that is not "Layla safe" she still manages to find stuff - it's like having another baby in the house ;) .

Here she is yesterday - bath time! She's just gone 15 weeks old and is still a little titch. She is the Belle of the Ball at puppy pre-school and has developed a "thing" for an enormous American Bull Dog puppy named Chuckie who at 16 weeks is about the size of a smallish Lab on steroids! He's a gentle giant; but he still manages to whack Layla almost across the room when they are romping. But she simply adores him...I can understand why as he is just gorgeous.

Go Pete!

MOMO3.2 03-19-2007 07:50 PM

Updat:

Pete came through the surgery fine. However, he aspirated some vomit during his bouts before the surgery and has developed pneumonia. It looks like Pete will spend two more days at the vets until he can eat enough food to take his antibiotics orally instead of through an IV.

My wife and I visited Pete today. He was able top wag his tail, but he is still pretty out of it. I will post pics when he is happy, healthy and home.

Thank you for the words of encouragement.

Sincerely,

Mike

targa911S 03-19-2007 07:54 PM

Poor Pete. Give him a hug for us. At least he is in good care and has lots of love from his owners.

lisa_spyder 03-21-2007 03:14 PM

Mike,

Any update on Pete? Hope he pulls through all this OK...

MOMO3.2 03-21-2007 08:40 PM

I am sorry to say that Pete is really going through a tough episode. The sutures in his intestines opened up. The Dr. had to re-open Pete and remove the area of necrosis. He had fluid all through his abdomen. The surgery was completed at midnight on Tuesday. We had to transfer him to an overnight emergency clinic and put him in ICU. Pete was vomiting blood and I really was not sure he would make it through the night.

Pete is really in trouble right now. The next 48 hours are critical. My wife and I have been visiting him and he is really in pain.

This is devistation.

Pete has gone through 6 days of hell. I cannot bare the thought of losing him so young and putting him through all this discomfort for nothing.

Mike

lisa_spyder 03-21-2007 10:43 PM

NO!

I'm almost sorry I asked Mike...and very, very sorry to hear this news.

I'm sending every positive vibe I can muster for Pete (and for you guys too)...I hope things go well in the next few hours.

targa911S 03-22-2007 05:11 AM

Oh man! When we didn't get an update yesterday I started to worry. This is not good news and I am SO sorry to here this. Please hug and kiss him for us. We are pulling for lil Pete here.

MOMO3.2 03-23-2007 03:32 PM

I am very sad to say we lost our beloved dog Pete this morning.

My wife and our children are crushed.

Pete was very special to us. He was the definitive loving and loyal companion to our family.

We love you Pete.

Sincerely,

Mike

Moses 03-23-2007 03:42 PM

So sorry Mike. Give the kids an extra hug tonight.

targa911S 03-23-2007 03:43 PM

NO!!!!!! Oh man..my heart goes out to you and your family. This is just a tragedy. You did what you could. Rest in peace Pete.

Tell this to your kids...it might help you too:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Mike I am very sorry for your loss. The poor Kids must be crushed.
Pete looked like such a sweet dog. I feel for ya.

stomachmonkey 03-23-2007 04:28 PM

So sorry for Pete and your family.

Take care.

widgeon13 03-23-2007 04:49 PM

Very sad to hear this most unfortunate news.

lisa_spyder 03-23-2007 05:44 PM

Mike,

I am so very sorry to hear the news. You've lost a family VIP.

It's so tough on all of you - we wish our pets could live as long as we do.

Give the kids a special hug from me...

Thinking of you all,

Lisa

Seahawk 03-23-2007 06:21 PM

What made Pete special is what makes a family...tears of sorrow are the soul of joy.

We learn from both.

I bet Pete was cool.

BertBeagle 03-23-2007 06:29 PM

Very sorry to here this. Pete had a great life and was well cared for. You did all you could. When the time comes and everyone is ready, you and your family will find a new companion that will become a part of the family and keep Pete's memory fresh. We have been through this in the last couple of years also. Our sympathy to your family.

Dan in Pasadena 03-23-2007 07:27 PM

Mike,
Terribly sorry to hear of your loss. Pete was a beautiful dog and fortunate to have such a loving owner.

I have been through this and it gets better and they always live in your memory...and after awhile, that is a wonderful warm memory. Dan

rexav8r 03-23-2007 07:50 PM

I'm so sorry for your family's loss.

I've thought from time to time what will happen when Tutti-Frutti (our Black Lab) goes. She's like a second Mom to the kids (7 & 4 right now). -& another child to my wife & I. Just the thought is tough for me.

Pete looked like a tough puppy ! I know & understand you thought it was a lot to put him through if he wasn't going to make it. You clearly did the best for him you could.

Thoughts and prayers are with you guys...

We have three really cool ferrets and just found out last month that two of the three have cancer and will succumb to the disease in a short time. Until then, we play with them, enjoy them and keep them comfortable. Amazing just how close you can get to a little furry creature!
