There was this guy at the ball park; an actor - he always plays a Columbian drug lord - you'd recognize him. He had a Whippet and would go to the field and chip golf balls and smoke cigars. We'd always say hi. Dudley loved chasing his dog and could keep up with his Whippet ONE TIME (and one time ONLY) across the field. Oh, he'd keep chasing her but it was hilarious that he couldn't come close to keeping up with her after the first lap. My understanding is Whippets are VERY fast, but not as fast as Greyhounds. Here's smiling Dudley in February of this year. I had to let him go in September but he did make his 14th birthday. I'll always love you boy! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1196703968.jpg |

[QUOTE=Dan in Pasadena;3622637]As you may know from earlier in this thread my recently departed, lifetime bestfriend Dudley the 14 year old Labrador, was actually a mix. He was partially Dalmation, though he didn't really look it so much (to me). In his youth he was INCREDIBLY fast. Waay faster than Sooner, my current 4 year old pure Labrador...and he's no slouch. I'd take my then 14 year old son to the ball field to fungo fly balls to him and Dudley would compete trying to catch the balls on the fly....fortunately he never did. He came VERY close a few times...a flying baseball woulda knocked his teeth out! But he'd retrieve them by the hundreds. He never tired of it even when exhausted.

Don't know his name, but I see his face. Whippets are in most ways half-sized greyhounds. They are also a bit more energetic from what I've seen. Dudley looked like a very happy pooch. Are you going to get another dog for the stable anytime soon? |
Ramm,
Yeah, Duds was a real peach. I become a slob when I start thinking of him. Our "baby" - 4 year old and 100lb "Sooner" the blonde lab probably would love it if we got something for him to chase! As it would happen we were offered a cockapoo male just the other day. It was a real cute dog for someone, but probably not a dog for us. I imagine at some point we will look but we are not actively looking now...perhaps that's a mistake, I don't know. For example, we are going on a week long ski trip in late January and will have to board Sooner. That costs a fortune for a big dog and I hate doing it because it is warehousing no matter what they tell you (I think). But to add the cost of another dog to that is prohibitive....of course Sooner would be happier if his own "little buddy" was with him. P.S. on the actor. I knew his name once but I've forgotten. This was prior to my son's H.S. graduation so about 8 or 9 years ago now. There are several hispanic actors you see over and over in the Columbian drug lord or sidekick role. This guy is sort of hawk beaked, balding a bit, real slender in movies but downright skinny in real life. He looks like he'd slit your throat in a minute but he's the nicest, most polite man you'd ever want to meet in real life. |
If you can spare extra scratch, there are private homes where they will 'board' your dog while you are away. Your dog basically gets to live with another family and some other dogs while you are gone, and its all done in a house. They interview you and make sure your dog is behaved before accepting it though. They have that down here. I haven't tried it yet, but I think I am going away in June and we'll have to do it.

My wife really goes over the top on Christmas decor every year. She enjoys it, so I just stay out of the way. She creates little snow villages and uses some polyester snow. Our pup saw it sitting out, snagged it, then sat and posed. This picture was completely spontaneous.

Tucker Died the Other Night
My boy died Sunday night, suddenly. He was fine and jumpy in the morning then, at lunchtime, threw up his breakfast. He wouldn't come out to eat at 4--we went to dinner, got home, and found him nearly unconscious. He died in my arms about 30 minutes later--I think he was waiting for us to get home to die!
He was diagnosed with throat cancer (tonsil) 2 years ago and given 3-6 mos to live. So he well-defied those odds but it seems like the cancer must have come back and perforated an organ, probably the stomach. My good buddy came over and we buried him in the backyard at midnight, clanging and cussing through the rocky Austin soil. I suspect the neighbors will want to account for all the human family members. We marked the grave yesterday with his food bowl inscribed on a post. I'm also not sure the grave in the back yard was a good idea since it reminds me of him every time I see it. Anyway, after having read all the "passing dogs notes" and the grieving, I confess I was/am still amazed at how incredibly grief-struck I am. It's been 2 days and I still well up when I think about him. I also confess that he was my favorite (he's the smiling Rhodie on the left in the picture). Freaking perfect dog: loved to play but didn't bug me to play; great protector of the family but so gentle the cats would easily back him down; sweet and affectionate but not needy or licky; obedient but not so mental that it was annoying. Even on his last day he would jump up shoulder-height with all four legs off the ground to go for a walk. Does anyone have an experienced opinion on whether I should get another dog or wait a while? I know that if we had only the one, I'd immediately get another. But we have 2 dogs now--the elder, Ben, is 14 and basically doesn't interact with Frankie the young setter mix. Ben will probably pass soon. Thanks in advance and I hope I don't bum you guys out on Christmas. Oh yeah. Merry Christmas. Jackhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1198613642.jpg |
Sorry to hear of this sad turn of events. There is no good time to say goodbye to a friend.
Decision to get another is tough, I have gone through this and always waited for a few months, up to a year. I always kept hearing the collar rattling even when he was gone, couldn't stand it any longer so would go out and find another friend. I always found it helped once the decision was made. Sorry your Christmas is so bummed out, better times are coming. Your good buddy is running in green grass and no more pain. |
