911 Crash Worthiness?
 

I'm curious of the crash test/worthiness of our P cars. I often drive fast, but safely. Does anyone know of info/comparisons/locations of this info? If I wreck at highway speeds will I still be able to chew my food someday?

I don't know about the crash safety, but your Benjamin Franklin qoute in your signature line is utterly priceless! I think I might be a Libertarian, if I had any interest at all in politics.

Check out this thread for a recent 911 crash test.

I think the 911 platform is very strong, but it won't compare in safety to an air bag laden soccer mobile.

I posted the same question some time ago and got back tons of replies that, "the Porsche is designed to be able to avoid accidents." That's fine until someone T-bones your p-car.

Well, I guess I'd better slow it down a bit. LOL!!

Active safety capabilities aside, the engineers designed these cars to go well over 100mph, and took into account that one could crash at those speeds. I don't think you can attribute typical "60's" design philosophy to these cars.

The main thing that worries me is that there are too many bumpers right about head height relative to my 911.

no matter how many pictures I seem to take, the pictures never seem to show just how bad this accident was. how I managed not to break any bones is still amazing to me ( although I did dislocate my left hip ) the peddles were half way up to my knees and the front wheel was pushed all the way back in to the drivers compartment. air bags would have been nice, I'm sure my face wouldn't have gotten so banged up. I'm very happy to be in one piece and on the mend.

chewing, yeah that's no problem, now getting up the stairs thats another story.

But ...I'm driving my new one now that it's been six weeks and little by little everything seems to be comming back.

You were wearing your seatbelt right? How fast were you going upon impact?

between the recaro's and my seat belts I'd say, that's what saved me. and for plowing into a canyon wall at 45-50 miles per hour well it definitely could have been worse.

I guess i've earned the name short wheel base sam now.

it's been six weeks as of today and I went to the doctor's on friday and he gave me the OK so watch out I'm back on the road .

as I'm getting ready to drive over to toms today, my wife is looking at me saying, you know honey if you crash this one they'll take your licence away. and then what will you do ?

Scary pics of swbsam's car. I hadn't realized the chassis sill folded up in the driver's door area or that the cabin was so penetrated.

Call for opinions - would a typical aftermarket roll-cage have prevented or greatly reduced the damage to the cabin (and driver)?

By "typical aftermarket" I mean the ones you can buy from Safety Devices, Autopower, etc, that weld-in or bolt-in to the sills, with a vertical bar down to the sill aft of the door leading edges, joined to the main roll bar by a side impact bar. I don't mean a custom NASCAR style cage with bars as thick as your biceps. Or was that impact too much?

Sam, did you have a strut bar on the car? I don't think a typical roll cage would help with intrusion from a frontal impact.

no, the car was a total stocker no,strut bar, the only thing I changed were the seats. I didn't like the way the factory sport seats fit me so I bought new recaro's , I have a pair of five point belts but I never got around to installing them either. short of a custom cage I don't think anything would have helped and that would have been way to much mod. for a factory turbo-look street car. with so few of them around one hates to make mods. that can't be undone easily.
