Awesome! I was on the "patrol" in 4th grade. Finally, I got to learn the trick to folding the belt into that square!.

My son is in a similar position this year except they call it "peer mediating" now.

No cool belt, no crackin' skulls just a highlighter yellow vest.

Perhaps, unfortunately. And it affects badly the attitude of drivers to all riders. But: after you have been hit by a car once (...or twice...or more...) it tends to make your riding behavior a whole lot more defensive and cautious. Less likely to flaunt traffic laws. More aware that you aren't entitled, and you aren't at the top of the food chain.

I think you misread what I wrote. I said that there is a grain of truth to it, and that it is too bad that there is. That when we bike riders act like that, it negatively affects how all drivers perceive us. I also suggested in a follow up post that such behavior on the part of the rider can lead to getting hit. It is hard enough sharing the road with autos as is; you don't need to add risk by riding stupid. Better?
