I think $186 is just the union dues for that single session.

Good Vibrations was one of the most complex pop productions ever undertaken, and the most expensive single ever recorded to that point. The production costs were estimated between $50,000 and $75,000 ($360,000 and $550,000 today) with sessions for the song stretching over several months in at least four major studios.

Despite the belief that Kaye played on the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations" single, a session list compiled by Craig Slowinski for The Smile Sessions box-set liner notes reveals that, although she unquestionably played on several sessions for the song, none of those recordings made the final edit as released on the single.

I believe the controversy was whether she played the guitar parts, but I didn't think there was any doubt that she played bass on those songs.

As Brian Wilson reports:

The bass part was important to the overall sound. I wanted Carol Kaye to play not so much a Motown thing, but a Beach Boys-Phil Spector riff, inspired by Phil. Carol played bass with a pick that clicked real good. It worked out really well. It gave it a hard sound.

By that time, Brian was showing a lot of genius writing. He was growing all the time and we didn’t know where it would end. I didn’t know about the drugs until later on, but he did start doing things in piecemeal fashion. It was like he was scoring a movie. But 12 dates on “Good Vibrations” – at three hours a date – is a long, long time to spend on one song. It was very unusual. But the way he kept changing the music around was interesting. We knew he was trying to perfect a great hit. And we knew it was gonna be big.

Brian had all the sounds in his head. He knew what he wanted and wrote out the bass parts for me. They were written crudely – it wasn’t the work of an educated person – but we could read it. Brian was a really sweet guy, but he could be cocky when he wanted to be. It was that cockiness that comes with youth. But he was sharp, with very good ears. And he was completely engrossed in what he was doing.

He did, He was part of the wrecking crew but toured with the beach boys when Brian didn't.

(The song) was recorded over a two-month period using top Los Angeles session musicians - the Beach Boys didn't play any instruments on the track. About 90 hours of studio time and 70 hours of tape were used, and at least 12 musicians played on the sessions. It's hard to know whose performances ended up on the record, but some of the musicians involved were Glen Campbell (lead guitar), Hal Blaine (drums), Larry Knechtel (organ) and Al de Lory (piano).

Ironically I had DVR'ed "The wrecking crew" and watched it yesterday.
Herb Alpert was a friend of a friend of the wrecking crew... Herb was broke and couldn't afford session musicians... the the friend ask some of the guys to sit in with Herb... he paid them $15 or $25... the song was a hit and he made a bundle... Herb went to the union and paid the fine then mailed checks for scale to all the musicians.
