my work here is done...I might be banned, but the 5 minutes of glory were worth it!
Reminds me of the time I snapped Joy Quinlins bra in 8th grade...2 weeks detention but we all got to see pancake size nips at a fraction of the cost!

That's what I was getting at when I asked "what's so special" about the pic. Hell, anyone can loop a plane.... but Bob would do a whole routine "dead stick"!!!

I saw Bob do his routine a couple of times. He'd get some altitude, shut down the engines, and then do so many flat spins, loops, etc that, well, it would make your head spin. I believe he held some records for this.
One time I thought I'd seen the end of Bob Hoover. He came in at the end of his routine so low, behind some hangers, and didn't come back up. We waited...and waited... and he came back up a thousand yards down field, still no engines. Turns out the hangers were above grade and in front of a dry wash, and Bob had silently flown down into the wash, only to shoot back up at the end, turn, and land on #'s in front of us. It still brings a chill to my spine! I thought he was a gonner(sp.?).

Yes, saw Bob Hoover several times do his "energy management - balancing speed and altitude" routine. And his shrike wasn't an aerobatic plane, was a standard business piston-engined plane.
The "greatest stick and rudder man that ever lived", I think Chuck Yeager called him. |

Ed, that reminds me of Gov Dukakis riding that tank with the same grin.

I fondly remember seeing Bob Hoover fly at airshows at Miramar NAS.
