The six cell battery in that picture as I owned with 3200MAH+ high density cells is about one pound on its own.

Prepped and lightened I was 9.5lb's with my monster truck. Same chassis, same class, the piston powered were about 8lb's. Now Lithium Polymer has come into play since then; which is not what is pictured in that article!!

What I enjoyed most about my Electric vs Nitro is the quiet, I could run the car in public places without providing a noise problem.

I noticed several flawed statements in that article, thank you for voicing out on that one aspect.

Electric RC is still faster than nitro - in general, yes?

That pack looks more like a 1500MaH but I could be wrong. The article is so full of BS you could fertilize 40 acres with it. Yes, the Radio Shack RC buggies are brushed, but the better cars you actually race have been brushless for years. The chassis could be had in anodized aluminum since the 80s for sure. Team Associated RC10 from the late 80s:

I had an associated RC-10 offroad buggy just like that in the early 80's and still have a RC10L road car.
Good stuff.

Back then the electric cars could not touch the nitro cars for performance.
Dunno if the brushless motors changed all that.

The big challenge with brushless now is not flipping over backwards with the buggies. The 1/10 scale sprints were just becoming popular when I was just getting out of the off road buggies and they could pull the front wheels up with the brushed motors, but they sucked batteries dry very quickly.

It is situational with which is faster around a race track.

For the off road vehicles in classes where chassis weight is higher, and there is less downforce in a run what you bring class with little rules the electrics with Lithium Polymer and Brushless motors rule the roost.

For oval racing the lighter weight of the nitro would still hold the advantage. The motor can be tuned for a narrow power band where it really rips.

For "street courses" it would depend on the track lay out.

If you have equal downforce, and one car weighs less, that downforce is worth more.

For racing, there are different classes, so which is faster isn't as relevent as whether you like the noise or don't like the noise.(Or if you want to run in places where people don't like the noise)
