At the old house we lived in the neighborhood had a punk kid in a Jeep with big "rhino bars" on the front. He liked to mow down a row of mailboxes deliberately as fun. Never any proof as he did it at 3:00 AM. The speed limit is 25 and the house was deep inside the neighborhood on a straight road, not on a major road.

My father in law came to fix the mailbox before I was married or even knew my wife. He brought down some 12 inch heavy walled steel drill pipe. It was a long piece. We have clay soil. He used a PTO driven boring tool, and drilled a deep hole, and filled it with concrete. Topped my a mailbox. It looked nice and was decorative.

Several years after we had sold that house my former neighbor called me laughing. The punk kid had a little brother. He decided to do what big brother did. There was a very loud BANG, and he was stopped cold. He hopped out, and ran home, called the police and reported his Jeep stolen in the morning. The cops towed away the Jeep. It scuffed the paint on the mailbox.

Not all heros wear capes. Every December we maintain a delivery person refreshment station.

We leave out snacks, from bad to good with water and red bull in the cooler.
