Yep, 4 dimes is 40 cents. 30 pennies is 30 cents. 40 is more than 30. 30 nickles would be 150.

Hey we have had decimal money for age.

A penny is 1 cent
A nickle is 5 cents
A dime is 10 cents,
A quarter is 25 cents
The rarely used half dollar is 50 cents
The even rarer dollar coin is 100 cents.

The lesson was for very young kids to teach them 30 pennies is NOT more than just 4 little dimes. And dimes are physically smaller than a penny.

I think the real humor in the photo is the drawing of the kid thinking.

Yes, the USA is full of weirdness...but now that you know, you can go back to hating Mustangs.

I think "cent" means "X /100" out of one hundred. Roman?

centimeter=1/100th of a meter
centipede= insect with 100 legs
century= 100 years
centennial= 100th anniversary
also 100 Senators per wiki

Latin. Roman works for me. Small town near Rome called Latium is where it (Latin) originated per web search.

The English called small denomination coins "bits". In the US, certain Spanish/Mexican coins were in circulation that were worth about 12.5 cents. So two of these coins (bits) were worth a quarter in the US.

Some of you guys don't give two cents about this fascinating topic.

That's my two cents.
