				Pop Up Ads!

Anybody else been infected recently with these dam pop up ads from www.endads.com???? What a scam. They infect your computer with pop ups and want you to buy their software to get rid of them! How do I get these things out of my computer. -- Curt

Mozilla and netscape have popup blocking functionality. Also, get AdAware from lavasoft.de, which will find and remove the crap that these other things install.

I was on autotrader.com today and had a very real looking "Your computer is infected with a virus - click OK to clean" window pop up. After staring at it for a while I clicked OK only to be taken to a web site to buy virus scanning/cleaning software. REALLY p!ssed me off. I sent AutoTrader a nastygram as I think it was one of their advertisers who initiated the pop up.

Thom, I'll give one of those a try. The strange thing is these ads seemed to have appeared right after I installed the 'Google Toolbar'. It is supposed to block popups and it does block most, but not these. Maybe just coincidence??? -- Curt

I tried Adaware but found that it wasn't as effective as I thiought it could be. I then found that Optimum Online (Cable Internet Service) had a free Ad/Spyware (Spybot) and Pop-up blocker. So far I like Spybot better than Adaware. I'm working on getting the Pop-up blocker going soon. Link is here----> http://www.optonline.net/popupstopper

When you select "Download Now" you'll have the option to download both above-mentioned apps. I previously liked Earthlinks great Pop-up blocker but after it expired as a stand-alone application it was part of a larger browser suite. No thanks! I've also found that spysweeper is an excellent preventative for Ads..... http://www.spysweeper.com/

The Mac Safari browser has a built-in pop-up blocker.

Thanks for the link Rick. Nicer to hear the pop ups getting flicked away rather than having to close them.

And has anyone else been getting a German Parts and Resoration pop up. Seems to be linked with the Pelican site but that would not make sense.

Actually, it does make sense. Some of the "spy ware" that websites use will track where you go (including Pelican) and pretty much your machine is an open book. They want to use the information to target advertising and to build a marketable profile of user habits. I have to say I think the free version of SpySweeper is Excellent.
