Oh My God, proof as good as any that I am getting OLD
Being a Honda Prelude owner I am cruising through THE main Prelude board this evening. But I am a traitor! I secretly drove a 911 SC this evening, with the intention of getting one or a Carrera as a 2nd car. And it was everything I hoped it would be, even the annoyances were somewhat endearing. I divulge my secret to my Prelude compatriots, quite enthusiastic about the whole experience, and I right away get "ugh, I hate older porshe's." What the... but...?? The Prelude used to be the Honda that was classy and racy at the same time, so I was rather disappointed with the reaction. Then I suddenly remembered- several of the more experienced people who continue to post on this site NO LONGER OWN Preludes, and only continue to post as a public service to try to keep Preludes from being lowered more than 1 1/2". And the ones who still own Preludes only post on the autocrossing board or goof off in OT. IS THIS LIKE ONE OF THOSE "LIFE EVENTS" LIKE GETTING MARRIED OR HAVING A CHILD?? Realizing you no longer relate to people who own the same car as you? Why don't people 8 years junior to me pine after clunky looking bug-eyed '80's 911's (I'm not even THAT old)?? I like my Prelude, I joke that it and the 911 will have to fight it out for beater status and the loser will get punished at autocrosses and DE events. But I compared the 911 to a hybrid Civic and surprisingly got mixed responses, is this the way God intended the world to turn out??
Just to cause a ruckus, the Prelude does more from 5200-7500 rpm than the SC did but that is partly what I am tired of

People want to *like* what they can obtain, or manage (ie prelude). They also want to dislike what they can't manage (sour grapes & 911 ownership is not for the meek.)
A prelude " classy and racy "? . . .gee; bait?. . . hmmm . . .'pedestrian & mediocre' is more like it. I'm not knocking Hondas (they put out some great product) but really; newsflash: a prelude is no NSX. One other thing. . . Don't buy an SC . . . you clearly don't "relate" to SC owners. - "clunky looking bug-eyed '80's 911's - "Prelude does more from 5200-7500 rpm than the SC - "the 911 will have to fight it out for beater status - "I compared the 911 to a hybrid Civic - "I'm a troll with a honda (implied)

you have to realize a few things. First off, this board is unlike pretty much every other bbs out there. For a variety of reasons, some of which I can't quite figure out. Second, the 911 is unlike any other car out there. Numbers don't matter...opinions of non-owners don't matter...the march of time and technology doesn't matter. The 911 is an icon and transcends being "just a car." That is not the case with a Prelude. For the Honda owner that poo-poos the 911 as "old and slow", "glorified vw", etc...well, they just don't get it. And most of them never will.
I actually didn't think your post was *total* troll bait...I figured there was some sarcasm in your prose (or at least gave you the benefit of the doubt...my colleague Island is less indulgent, although probably closer to the mark). My wife used to drive a Prelude (uh oh...did I just call it a chick car?), and although I didn't fit in it (not enough headroom), it was a fun fast car. But that was about it. Yet another disposable piece of Japanese engineering. Performance, a touch of style, very little soul. btw, the SC redlines at 6300, so I don't know how you compared the two cars at 7500rpm. V-tec is cool, but between the two cars in the twisties at 6K? I'll take air-cooled thank you. Last edited by nostatic; 09-28-2003 at 08:39 AM.. |

one thing that most people seem to forget: no matter how much you add to a Honda Civic (or any other Honda for that matter) to increase performance, handling etc. in the end, you're still left with - well - a Honda
