The New Pontiac GTO
What do you all think of the new Pontiac GTO? Its a Holden (Australlian Chevy) that has a pretty dedicated following due to the supercar race series that it does well in. I generally don't like Pontiacs but this one is different to me.

I'm not going to sell the hot-rodded 911, but I'm glad that GM is thinking about the gearhead crowd. Should be a fun car. I love the massive low end grunt of V-8s.
|
How is rebadging an existing car faithful to the tradition of the GTO?
They might as well have taken a Buick and put a V8 and a six-speed in it. |
I dont understand GM, they take a BEAUTIFUL, powerful, rear wheel drive car like the Impala SS, and turn it into an UGLY front wheel drive commuter car.
The n they come out with a re-badged Monaro, put different bumpers on it and they say "This is what the GTO would have evolved into" I dont think so. Im sure the car performs beautifully, but I think it looks like a Chevy Cavalier. |
I cant figure out why they would bring back a legend like the GTO and put its badge on that car. The whole of GM must be on crack.
|
Badge engineering.
GM has designed what, 3 or 4 truly new vehicles in the last couple of decades? Adding some plastic body cladding and a new name does not a new vehicle make. |
It will flop. Who will pay over $30K for a car that looks like it costs < $20K? R&T review says poor quality build too.
|
At the NY Auto Show it looked like a last generation, stripped down mustang to me. I was utterly unimpressed. Apparently the day of the legendary Goat are long gone....welcome Aztek and other abominations.
BTW, the new Mustang from Ford was quite nice. One of the few highlights of my visit. |
Yeah, the new Mustang GT looks AWESOME!
Although I'd prefer the redhead... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1068837482.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1068837505.jpg |
I guess I agree with the majority here. I like the idea of the big V-8, competent handling, etc. But, I couldn't live with the build quality. After all, a guy could get a nearly new (very low mileage) Carrera for less money. I'll take the Carrera.
Thanks, Troy |
Is that car huge or are those chicks midgets??
|
GM has held the GTO nameplate in its back pocket for a long time. I expected GM to keep it there until they were able to glue it on something that would really kick butt.
The original drove off the showroom floor to the track and put many dedicated race cars to shame. Looks like they decided to attempt to cash in on the name without the hardware to back it up. |
Troy,
IMO the build quality on my Ford Explorer is in many respects superior to my Carrera. Is this apples to apples? Not quite as the Carrera is (Semi) "Hand Made". The type/quality of materials used is another story. But you get what you pay for. |
I'm not a real big "muscle car" fan to begin with, but the new GTO looks pathetic and extremely uninspired. You would think that when they decided it was time to bring back such an iconic model/name, they would have spent more time and produced something worthwhile. Looks like just another GM *****heap to me. As mentioned above, it looks like Ford got it right with the new retro Mustang.
|
THe Mustang actually resembles a '69 but, with alot of Modernization (obviously).. very early gt500 looking or Cobra looking.. I love it..
As far as the GTO is concerned. Whatever, it doesn't resemble a GTO at all..sorry to disagree with you, but I don't like it the least bit |
That Mustang looks great! I wonder how much they will be priced.
Just in time for the remake of Bullitt. |
yep, precisely my point!! looks great, a little LARGE but still looks good.
|
The Mustang looks great to me...and I'm a fervent Ford hater.
Bullitt?? REMAKE??? It's perfect the way it is! :) Seriously, they could never remake it. Who in the world is cool enough to take on Steve McQueen?? |
Vin Deisel... he'd be o.k. or Bruce Willis would be a better choice.
|
No, and no.
Bullitt had a BRAIN. |
