60 yr old rappers
I was talking to a co worker and we were talking about how people always go back to listening to the music of their era (16-20)
I then wondered, when the white rich suburban kids of today become 60 years old, will they listen to rap music? Not meaning to start a pissing match, just asking a sociological question |

Absolutely.
I'm not gettin' any younger, and there are still days when only "Straight Outta Compton" will do.

While it seems appropriate that my grandparents listen to Lawrence Welk and the music of their youth, I'm having trouble imagining myself at 65 listening to Ministry and Thrill Kill Kult at ear-bleeding volume.
What I often ponder during these lucid moments is... Since kids must absolutely listen to music that's more outrageous that their GRANDPARENTS, what music is going to be out there to 'top' the likes of "Cop Killer" and other rather controversial songs 30 years from now. I've heard the arguement that, at one point, even the Beatles were considered risque, but again, what more can you do language wise to top a long string of foul and violent language used by the pseudo-angst ridden intellectual marvels that are spewing out 'music' right now?

Absolutely! Remember, the Beatles and the Stones were plenty controversial in the 1960s, and bands like Black Sabbath were considered "devil's music" in the 1970s. Perceptions change over time, and the passage of time makes us consider the past nostalgically. Hell, when I listen to new rap, I yearn for the days of Snoop and Dre (same goes for Rock, really: whenever I hear Godsmack or Staind, I can't help but think that Nirvana and Pearl Jam were so much better... ok, bad example - Nirvana and Pearl Jam WERE so much better).
Like I said, perceptions change over time. Do you remember how controversial THE SIMPSONS was when it first aired? Bart Simpson tee shirts were banned in public schools! Now THE SIMPSONS is considered family fare!

I listen to all types of music and always have. My favorites are of the harder variety. New and old.
Speaking of what will be considered controversial, anyone have a comment on the latest Nickelback tune "Firgured You Out"? There's NO WAY IN HELL that song would've been on the air 15 yrs ago. I was going to type a few lines of the song but I feel its theme is not PG material. ![]() |

The really interesting question is: "what type of music will teenagers be using to shock their (Eminem and 50cent fan) parents in 20 years?"
![]() Music has always been a huge part of my life, (~40 years), and my taste is always evolving. I am frequently around younger people, (all of the employees in my painting business are hipster/musicians in their 20s), the enduring thing that we can always agree on is quality music. Great songwriting in any genre always stands the test of time, everything else falls to the side of the road like parts off of an AMC Eagle. ![]() That said, Outkast, Beck and The Foo Fighters will still be played in 20 years, not sure about The White Stripes. Definitely not The Strokes. Limp Bizkit has already been forgotten, (why did you have to bring them up!!), Korn will be remembered for another 2 months. All great folk music, (Sex Pistols, Public Enemy, NWA, Rage Against The Machine), always lives forever. That's my fitty-two cents. ![]()

![]() I haven't pondered what anyone will be listening to in 20 years, because my music tastes constantly change. As long as it evokes emotion, who cares? Few like it, but trance (DJ Tiësto, Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren) really gets me moving. As a teenager I grew up with classic rock, but I don't listen to it much nowadays. |

Nothing against the White Stripes, Curt. Jack White is very talented, but the verdict is still out on his songwriting, for me. Not that crazy about their record.
Now, Outkast on the other hand, those guys are brilliant beyond belief. God, I wish I could buy stock in those guys. Off the hook. (Did you know that "Sorry Miss Jackson" is about Eryka Badu?) Trivia, I know. They are geniuses in the league of Stevie Wonder, just wait and see, soon everyone will agree. ![]() I think that popular music is on the upswing after some dry years, we'll see. ![]()

"what type of music will teenagers be using to shock their (Eminem and 50cent fan) parents in 20 years?"
I have seen the future. The lyrics read: "Kill your parents eat a baby set fire to an orphanage" "That said, Outkast, Beck and The Foo Fighters will still be played in 20 years, not sure about The White Stripes. Definitely not The Strokes. Limp Bizkit has already been forgotten," Well, The Strokes and the White Stripes are kinda like the Velvet Underground or The Stooges (or maybe The Mothers of Invention?) of the present day. Radiohead would probably be the Pink Floyd (think about the comparisons between DARK SIDE OF THE MOON and OK COMPUTER), or maybe the Pixies... Outkast and Stevie Wonder is a good analogy; Eminem is probably comparable to a Neil Young/Bob Dylan kind of figure, with more controversy, of course. Nirvana is probably the Beatles of the 1990s, the main difference being Nirvana was brought to an end way before they made their White Album.

Given the fact that Gregorian chants are still around, I think the musical library will choke on itself at least to weed out all but the most signifiacant. So, maybe 20-30 years hence when Eminem is gray about the ears, not too much of this stuff will be remembered.
Someone said Stones and Beatles. There were literally hundreds of bands from that era. Whom of them do you hear now? |

of todays groups, not many will endure. Radiohead, to be sure - their fanbase is just too fanatical and their albums are simply too beloved by the critics. Outkast will probably last due to their ingenuity. I wouldn't be shocked if Justin Timberlake had a long career. Obviously Phish will be around for awhile... they pretty much have a niche monopoly. Red Hot Chilli Peppers will last, that's a bit of a given. I think the White Stripes have staying power as well.

Radiohead will endure for sure. OK Computer is easily one of the greatest albums ever made. Still to this day I get goosebumps listening to it. I havent heard enough of Outkast to consider them in the realm of Stevie Wonder. (Nothing will ever top Songs in The Key Of Life if you ask me..)
It's a shame that the Pixies havent gotten the recognition they deserve, went to Nirvana instead, (Smells Like Teen Spirit is a BLATANT rip off of the Pixies BTW). I'm surprised no one has mentioned Tori Amos, Alicia Keyes or Ani DiFranco. One other thing, to compare the Strokes or the White Stripes to the VU or the Stooges? Sorry, Both are good bands IMHO, but nowhere near as influential. (However the white stripes do come pretty close to the Iggy vibe) |

I must be a lot older than most of you, cause I haven't got a clue who most of these groups are, althought I did see Outkast while I was backstage at the Wayne Brady Show a couple of weeks ago, they were pretty good.

Hugh R - Hell I'm 18 and I've never heard of half these bands. Long live the Stones!! (no, really, I can't see Keith Richards dying any time soon!)

Klaus, I am kinda in the same boat. I am 23 and most of what i listen to is in the classic rock vein. Although i do get a little perterbed listening to classic rock stations because they give far too much time to subpar bands (Foreigner, George Thoroughgood [sp?]). Give me the Beatles, Led Zep, Floyd, and the Who any day. Most new bands fall short, IMHO. The ones I DO like are Radiohead, Weezer (although they suck live), Flaming Lips, the Eels, etc.

No way in hell I'm going back to Butt Rock. The best thing that happened to rock was when Nirvana killed Mullet Music.

OK Denis, you're going to need to hold my hand here and walk me thru this. I checked out 4-5 tracks from Outkast on Music Match and it's just not doing it for me. What CD does a beginner need to listen to to see what all the fuss is about? -- Curt
