i have been smoke free since the 1st monday of this year, just like last year and the year before. i have lasted as long as march (last year) before starting again. this year i'm taking a pipe in the evenings to take the edge off. quitting is the hardest thing i have ever tried to do.

being a smoker, still am like a 12 stepper i guess, i hated the 50% of smokers that are the guy that was described to open this thread. the 50 club gives all a bad name. its like anything else, there are idiots that give an entire group a wrap.

me: "im toby, and im a recovering smoker" group: "hello toby"

i have found that if you are to smoke in a car, one of those starbucks glass bottled coffee drink containers is a great butt depository.

Hetmann 01-30-2004 07:14 AM

I don't really give a rat's behind about smokers. If they want to die miserable deaths, that's their business. The fact that they want to justify it by citing statistical anomalies, great. We all rationalize our poor decisions and mistakes.

What I hate is litterbugs. If you don't want whatever gracing your private little domain, don't pitch it out the window either.

Not whining, just stating an opinion.

Didn't say it's not affecting me.... Read again. I'm more than aware of the risks I face nearly every day, and yup, smoking is one.

Do you have the right to expose me to the same risk in public? I think not. You may think otherwise. That's why we have laws and a legislative process.

Same risk? Not proven, but I sure am glad the govenment is willing to protect me from all of the boogiemen out there...
I prolly need to check under my bed tonight.

As for the litter issue with me, I smoke as I said Camel unfiltered.
when I ditch one, what happens? nothing , a very small piece of paper and a small amount of tobacco go back to where it came from just as the rest of us. Earth to earth ashes to ashes. I got
used to Camels in Viet Nam when I served as an Recon Marine
with C co. 1st Force Recon. If you field strip your butt no one knows you've been there!! If after almost two years in country
I haven't earned the right to small freedoms, Who has? Again
Your Freedom ends at the begining of my nose!

Stuttgart951 01-30-2004 07:59 AM

Good God...

Its a cigarette people, not the plague in rolling paper.

Heres where I stand on the issue (Im a smoker).

If smokers have the responsibility to restrain from enjoying a cigarette in the presence of non-smokers, non-smokers have the responsibility to avoid being next to a smoking individual. Dont show up at a restaurant and ask me to put out my cigarette - go sit somewhere else, Uppityman.

The statistics surrounding smoking are about as permeous as Swiss cheese. If anyone is really interested, I can try and find a couple articles that examine the numbers behind 'smoking related deaths.' Youd probably be surprised to find that almost half of the number of 'smoking related deaths' occur after age 75 and they also include unrelated deaths, including 'smoke ihalation' as an example. Thats right, if your house burns down and you die of smoke inhalation, youre a smoking related death statistic.

These studies are not scientifically motivated, they are politically motivated. Smoking was more dangerous that it was marketed to be 50 years ago, but now that has reversed. The stigma surrounding smoking related health issues is blown way out of proportion.

Im not trying to justify my habit to anyone (dont really feel the need) but Im starting to get slightly angered over to the constant stigma surrounding smokers. You'd think we had just been fitted for a neatly pressed black uniform with a red Swaztika on the sleeve.

"Sir, we know youre in there with the cigarettes. Come out with the cigarettes above your head, we have you surrounded."

"YOULL NEVER GET ME COPPERS!! MWAHAHAHA!! (inhale)"

The entire argument and the behavior it harbors is right up there with 'Bush is Hitler' in my book. Totally ridiculous.

People believe what they want to believe. Even smart/educated ones. You can smoke all you want in your own house by yourself (or with other smokers), or car (if you don't throw the butts out the window). As for around other people:

http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/etsfs.html

http://www.tobaccoscam.ucsf.edu/Secondhand/Secondhand_iih_internal_1.cfm

http://uscnews.usc.edu/hscweekly/detail.php?recordnum=8979

and as for the recent study that said there was no risk from second-hand smoke, well, that was funded in part by the Center for Indoor Air Research, which is supported by Phillip Morris. Lot's of very good scientists say the study is seriously flawed:

Thankfully, there is no smoking in resturants in California, so that isn't an issue.

So people enjoy smoking, and want to be able to smoke around other people. How about masturbation?

An EPA study! Thanks, for the life of me I knew it was some oddball report in the early 90's that really lit (pun) the fire! Thanks NS!
This is a no-win arguement, but fun nonetheless.
For the record, I put my butts in a half-empty beer can between my legs while driving 80 MPH through a school zone, on my way to dump my drain oil in the wildlife refuge where I hunt bald eagles and spotted owls....

Someone throws a butt out the window with a 99.999% chance of not affecting your life in any way and you respond by throwing your nuts out the window. Not only do you intend to cause property damage but you also introduce the potential of causing a very serious accident/pile up.

Please: this is all so blown out of proportion. I don't study these statistics because they're meaningless in the grand scheme. The only thing that will get smokers to quit is when the sin taxes get so outrageous on a pack, economically, it will be more feasible to chew gum.

...which is illegal in Singapore BTW.

...and, supposedly, causes cancer from the saccharin (sp?).

But if one is truly concerned about "environmental" issues, and beyond *****ing about habits, nasty as they are, of this board I reccommend we all walk away from our nasty Porsche habit. They're loud, visually obnoxious (in some cases), pollute like lawn mowers, and can be driven to the point of extreme danger.

Yet, who on this board is gonna' do that? Not me. My fellow man will just have to "deal" with it.

As long as we're throwing studies around, one that I do know of states that fast food is more likely to cause damage to one's health than cigarette smoking. And obesity seems to have displaced smoking as a leading cause of death.

Maybe that's because Fatso over there is too busy stuffing his hole to fit in a Marlboro Light.

In short, cigarettes kill about as much and often as Big Macs, IMO. But it's easy to beat up on a corporation that's gotten all the negative press lately, and is not so fiscally popular as fast food conglomerates.

Oh, and by the way, I think Phillip-Morris has a hand in baby food, too - no one's complaining about that, however.

I think, if anything, Phillip-Morris and McDonalds should team up - they'd be a great new-world order, if not a legal form of population control.

Gimme a break. It's the 0.001% of the time (your statistic) that I would actually even consider using them. If some f*cktard nails me with a cigarette I'm gonna try to return the favor (assuming I haven't lost it and ended up under the wheels of a semi at 80 mph because my pants caught fire!). If he misses, lucky him.

Yeah, I ride around the highways randomly flinging rusty metal at people, because I like getting shot at.

turbo6bar 01-30-2004 09:48 AM

Anybody else a puny weakling when it comes to cigarette smoke? My eyes water, and I have problems breathing when I'm around smokers. I don't go to bars because of this.

Well said.

You guys can smoke all you want just don't force me to inhale your cancer air.

(To the smokers) Imagine someone sitting down next to you at a restaurant/bar/cinema whatever and farting like crazy. How'd you like that? ;) It's the same thing except smelling other people's farts isn't dangerous to your health.

surflvr911sc 01-30-2004 09:59 AM

techweenie 01-30-2004 09:59 AM

One of the side effects of most drug addictions -- including nicotine -- is the ability to create logical constructs to defend the drug consumption. Even though those constructs are clearly illogical.

Cigarette smoking is one of the stupidest behaviors a human can indulge in, and yet addicts will usually try to find something --anything -- to distract from that fact.

BTW, Porsche put out a bulletin about throwing cigarettes out of Boxsters. Turned out a couple times, burning butts were pulled into the engine air intake and set the cars on fire. Somebody is always trying to prove Darwin was right, it seems.

I used to smoke in the car, but i got fed up of having to change cars when the ashtray got full.

Actually, I still do smoke in the car. Once a day (first on on the way to work), and yes it getes tossed out of the window. It's only 'cause i removed my ashtray to put a A/F meter there! sort of a performance over function thing.....

AFJuvat 02-02-2004 04:42 PM

Yes, I'm a smoker,

AND with malice aforethought, throw butts out the window...

I do try to make sure that any car behind me is a safe distance before I toss it though.

Florida does not allow smoking in eating establishments, fine, I have no problems with that.

I don't smoke in my house, as I have a wife and 2 kids that do not smoke.

I don't smoke in the car when my kids are in it with me.

So, if I'm in a place that I can legally smoke, I'm smoking.

Deal with it.

You don't like it, move.

Smokers.... Maybe we should all take up crack instead, that way, we would be victims, instead of placed in the same social level as lepers.

As far as swimming with cigarette butts in the ocean.... Figure out a way to deal with the tons of garbage, raw sewage, and medical waste that is washing up on our shores. Once you get that knocked out, then talk to me about cigarette butts in the ocean.

or to make a long story short...

"I don't tell you how to live your life, don't tell me how to live mine...If you don't like the smoke, move or get thicker skin.

**puff**
