Anybody know how long a cigarette filter lasts? I'm genuinely curious. I used to live on a state highway and there were literally hundreds of butts that would accumulate along the shoulder and in my lawn! They never seemed to go away, just kept accumulating. I confess to throwing the occasional cigar butt out the window (where there's no possibility of igniting something or hitting somebody!), but that's no more than thowing out a rolled up leaf that will quickly turn to compost.

lucky strikes don't have filters..........there.....problem solved :D
|
Hahaha .... if I were a cig smoker, it'd be Lucky Strikes or Camel unfiltered. If you're going to do something, don't do it half way!! :D

http://www.cigarettelitter.org/ They say filters are made of plastic and will last in the environment like any other plastic. Many smokers think they are cotton and use that as their excuse for littering. Reminds me of my dad's solution for old motor oil. "It came out of the ground... nothing wrong with putting it back in the ground." (He said while pouring five quarts in a hole in the back yard). |
I am indifferent towards smokers.
People who toss lit cig butts out of car windows are jerk-offs. For anyone saying it is "no big deal", let me throw a lit match into your Porsches' interior, then get back to me. Note: attitude developed after a jerk-off threw a lit cig out on the highway and said cig entered my 944 via the open sunroof. |
One of the things I hate about traveling out of CA is dealing with the smokers in restaurants. I've noted that in the D.C. area there are a lot of people who still smoke - but still minimal compared to Europe. There people smoke while they are eating. The most telling sign was in a train station in Lyon, France. Standing on the platform I could only see the two train rails poking through the millions of cigarette butts.
Euros still consider smoking sexy. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/puke.gif Oh yeah forgot to mention, I'm an ex smoker. I picked up the habit when I was an exchange student in Cambridge England for a year. Thankfully came to my senses about 10 years ago. Back then I used to toss butts out the window (didn't want them stinking up the car) but always clear of motorcyclists. |
With cars and factories and chemical dumps putting billions and billions (thanks Mr. Sagan) of tons of pollution into the atmosphere each year... ...don't you think this energy would be better spent on targeting the gross offenders?
I know that cig butts and smoking are not exactly pleasent, but I believe it's proverbially pissing in the ocean compared to the industrial pollution problem. Thing is, it's easier to shake your first at a smoker in a restaurant than to go up and shake the gates and wave your fist at the local ChemCo. which is why smoking is the latest P.C.target. While you're sitting in that smoke free California restaurant, you're inhalling all sorts of invisible toxins from the world outside. THAT ruins MY meal. ..but lets all be honest who does the most polluting here. Why aren't you ranting about that? |
Probably cause nobody is throwing toxins at our cars.

I smoked for a couple of years. I have not smoked for 16 months now.
People that complain about smokers harming there health while they are driving an older Porsche that leaks oil and has no catalitic converter are full of *****. Look at the smog over LA. I think most of you have more to worry about in the air than some cigarette smoke once in a while. If you plan on going to the bar, you know it is going to be smoke filled, you don't complain when you go to the race track and it smells like exaust and gas. As for the "fireballs" the smokers throw out of the car, not all smokers throw them out the window like not all people throw there bigmac wrappers out the window. Throw a lit cigarette into a puddle of gas, it will never ignite, forest fires are different and anyone that throws a butt out the window in fire season is as stupid as the person that lights a campfire. I see way more fast food/7-11 garbage than cigarette butts, and I think that is a bigger problem. Dave |

if everyone lit luckys or camels ? they could eat them while driving, like roaches, instead of tossing them lit out the window. Huh ! |

Pesky roaches... |
I have no problem with smokers smoke, just their road missles.
I think I read somewhere that just breathing the air in LA is the equivalent of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. |
since large corporations pollute millions of times more in a year than i could POSSIBLE pollute in my entire life doesn't give me the right to pollute. i don't understand the logic behind that. since there is sewer in the ocean, i can throw away anything i want in there? besides, it's huge. my car leaks oil (drips, rather) i can pour the oil in the back yard after changing it?
i don't care if you choose to smoke. i don't care if you choose to do drugs. i don't care if you choose to bang your head against the wall. i really don't. just do it so it doesn't affect me... and threatens the life of my children. don't drink and drive, don't do drugs and drive and endanger the life of my child playing in the yard. some of the previous posts are so dumb that it's humorous. serge |
Serge,
I re-read my post since I didn't recall mentioning that anyone had the right to pollute. I didn't find any reference to that upon re-reading it. So you must have missed my point. It was: A LOT of people have a LOT of energy in this country to condemn smokers and all the "air quality issues" that smokers create. I would hazard a guess that a single out-of-compliance chemical factory pollutes more in a year than all the smokers in the country combined... ...and there are tens of thousands of those factories. So why aren't these same "air quality people" so absolutely rabid about these polluting factories that are thousands of times worse? Are they scared to take on a corporation? It think it's probably because too many people in the US have WAAAY too much free time and take a special delight in "being offended". BECAUSE if they were REALLY concerned with air pollution they would attack the REAL problem first, industry, NOT smokers. They're just taking the easy way out. (Lighted highway missles being the exception of course) |
If we want to talk about contributions to pollution, did anyone here know that space shuttle launches put more ozone depleating chemicals into the atmosphere than do all other man made sources?
|

I believe volcanos, like mt St Hellen, are no prize either.. maybe something like one good blast = 50yrs of industrial pollution |
Holy Cow!
I'm definitely going to petition the local IHOP for a "No volcano's or Space Shuttle's section"! (Tongue firmly in cheek) |
Damn, Chris: if I didn't know any better, you sound (write) like a pack-a-day man.
Or are you a friendly crusader to the future John Wayne black lung hall of famers? |
I haven't really seen a firm answer as to why smokers think it is ok to chuck the butts out - litter is litter, IMO. Having said that, I did decide that butts put into a trash can would be a no-no (fire, fire!).
Actually, I think that cigarette butts thrown out the window of a car at night look really cool - like pretty fireworks :D but I still think it is naughty. I don't mind mild secondhand smoke, but would never take up smoking for the health problems it causes (all cardio-vascular aspects - lungs AND heart). The cafe's I hang out in are not really smoke free and I don't care, and as a caffeine addict (noooo, headaches) it would feel hypocritical to criticise someone's nicotine addiction ;) |
I barely swerve to avoid bikers that wear those sprayed on panties.
Why would I swerve to avoid a cig butt? Whenever I see that, I will usually phone their license plate in to the smoky smog toll-free number in Kalifornia. I understand they get a summons for a smog check. Hey, they were smoking, right? |
get over it
i have been tryin to quit for 2+ years now and every time i start right back up. but why the hell would you throw crap at other drivers because of a cig? i dont get it really it didnt put a dent in your car, chip your paint, crack your windsheild or really hurt you in any way. you dont like it because its a nasty stinky habbit to you? then dont smoke and leave people who do smoke whe hell alone! becareful who you throw your spare parts at; there was an article in the paper here about a glass jug of paint stripper that someone threw on the hood of another drivers car! i had a to laugh at the dude who threw the glass you know i mean what a fcuking 2 year old baby!~ k |
You're right about the butt tossing not causing any physical harm.
But it does send the message that the tosser takes a F-you attitude towards our shared environment. If you won't toss a butt on your own front door step every day and watch them stack up, what makes you think people want to see your ashtray at every intersection? I agree it's an out-of-bounds reaction, but you need to understand that someone who tosses spare parts is simply reciprocating your F-you attitude. |
(most of the time) I do not have an F-You attitude, i always try to make sure there are no motorcycles or converts behind me! one time when i was riding my motorcycle down highway 370, this dude tossed a smoke out his window and it lodged itself between my head and my helmet. Man that **** hurt i had no choice but to snuff it by, more or less punching my helmet into the side of my head! It sucked but it didnt ruin my day by any means.
mmm the smell of burning head!! all i ask is please dont throw spare parts at me when i am in the p-car. Kyle |
