And having just been on the receiving end, twice in two weeks, by petty thieves with other instances in the last few years, I can appreciate the merits of the Islamic approach. I would draw the line at victimless crimes and issues of morality which I don't believe should be a matter of law, but for the rest...

An expert in knots and stringing people up most certainly, familiar with those about to be hanged most certainly.

But by the nature of things his clients would be those not deterred by capital punishment.

I'm not sure if there is anyway to establish how much of a deterrant it is. Some might consider a long prison sentence to be worse. Others could view a long prison sentence as an occupational hazard.
