Take out the hard drive from the old one and plug it in as a 'slave' drive. Then you can transfer files and put it back in the old one, not loosing the OS or the programs. You could also leave it in the new one and just have a second drive.

There is a jumper plug on the HD, on the old one, make sure to change it over to 'slave' before you boot up.

Both of the suggestions are good ones - the "slave trick" is generally what I do. XP has a great little "transfer files and settings or new computer wizard" that works like a charm if you have media to do it with (like a cd burner or tons of floppies).
Best solution is to use the wizard - store the files/settings to your hard drive, install the hard drive as slave on your new computer and then unpack the files and settings using the wizard. Don't forget that you cannot use programs directly from the slave disc. You have to reinstall these on the new computer before you can use them. But the wizard saves all your data files that accompany your programs, so when you do reinstall the data files are automatically there for the program to use. Once you're done "milking" the slave you can erase it and put it back in your old computer. Good luck |
