Taz,
I never said that the music industry was innocent of anything. THe fact that they glorify violence and drug abuse, also racism is pretty disgusting. BUt, Music is Music and MTV didn't invent that. If you take away the videos, you have still have the same end result artists being artists. Music hurts noone, sorry to enter this disagreement, but I feel that it's my responsibility to argue this point. Stern is a talk show host, plaiin and simple, whether or not he is offensive is up to personal opinion which we all posess, whether or not speed channel and MTV are reinforcing bad driving ( Extremely dangerous and not up for "personal opinion") is irresponsible and not a wise move. If some artist wants to have chicks shaking their asses in a video to help sell some Numdnut his CD then who cares, who is that hurting? Not me I could care less I can just change the channel but once again, you can't just close your eyes as some kid is barrelling into you at 80 mph because he's lost control of his "tuned Car" while he's emmulating his role models. Music is not dangerous, neither is poetry or Radio talk shows, but irresponsible and reckless "how to shows are.
I have a problem with Home improvement shows also, people are electrocuting themselves all over the country due to the fact that when you go to a home depot or Lowes home improvement center, they'll pretty much sell anything to anyone with no regard towards what is being done.
If you're more concerned about what 50 cent is saying than what you childrens reactions are towards what he's saying then you may have problems in the future. My kids play music as do I and totally understand that he's just expressing himself. Just because we don't like what he's saying ( understandablly so sometimes) it doesn't mean that we should burn his CD's, our kids have enough common sense ( most of the time) to acknowledge he's just saying what he needs to say, and there's probablly a good reason for why he's speaking about what he needs to get off of his chest. Hey did our parents threaten to smash our Hendrix albums? Some of our parents didn't do that, my mom used to make me learn 1 beatles song a week for allowance, that was pretty cool looking back on it. My dad was a bass player for Diana Ross, lou Rawls and Roy Buchanan to name a few. I was raised aroiund arrtists and musicians and have seen discrimination first hand.
Also I've built a few "drag cars" as a youth with my uncles, who used to drive them to the local Track and race them there, not on the street.
Yeah, this was long winded, but maybe we could all hopefully focus on what is really wrong with what's happening today, not what we don't want to hear. Actions are more powerful than words.
Frank

Do you see the same dangers from people accessing automotive info on the net, or from a repair manual as you do from home improvement centers?

Your argument about the message of those shows is not without merit, and I completely agree with your concerns of artists (the actors in those shows) expressing a dangerous message through words and images to an impressionable public. However unless you want to be protected from all of those dangerous artists in the entertainment industry, (and you just know that those deciding what is and isn't improper will make some terrible decisions), I think we would be better off explaining why those shows' messages are so dangerous to as many people as we can, and letting these shows just die their early deaths. True artistic expression has meaning and value, unfortunately much of what is exposed by the entertainment industry today is judged on its profitability rather than its artistic content.

Taz,
I have info regarding the Stern situation.

Here you are if you're interested...
1.) Howard Stern Denounces the Bush presidency, and calls for Bush to be thrown from office. Also, he's making statements that are very "anti" Bush.
2.) 3 days later the fcc is on all clear channel and Infinity stations fining them out of operation unless they kill Stern's show immediately.
3.) Stern announces next day after the off airings he will begin reporting dirt he has been keeping to himself but now feels compelled to "educate the public about the BUsh presidency and all it stands for"
4.) Stern announces on the air that he's discovered that Clear CHannel is the Largest Campaign contributer to the Bush Campaign since it's inception.

Interesting eh? Stern says what's on his mind and Bush pressures his biggest Campaign contributer to basically "kill him" so, they do.
5.) Stern announces daily his ponderings about his life expectancy of being on the air, also if anyone will hear from him after he's done with Radio...
6.) Bush threatens Stern publicly calling him an anti American and another enemy of our country....

I'm not sure about that Cooler. Possibly I wouldn't know, this all new news to me regarding Stern's bosses affiliations, I don't even listen to him too much anymore simply due to the fact that I thought he was funnier when he was married, now he just seems too comfortable being a bachelor, he doesn't goof on his wife anymore or his kids. THat was funny stuff because he was living it. Now all he does is celebrate his celebrity status and is getting pretty political, but he's still great.
Opie and Anthony were the reigning champs of drivetime Radio shows, they were genuinely funny IMO. Jim ( Don Rickles son) was a total Psycho.

I didn't realise that Stern was denouncing Bush; that puts a whole new spin on the situation, now, doesn't it?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: America needs a modern Orwell - someone on the left that is RESPECTED AND REVERED (ie not Stern, Geraldo, Colmes, Mahr, Moore) to blow the whistle on the decidedly Fascist tendencies of our administration (don't jump on me for this -- by definition, practically EVERY administration has had SOME Fascist tendencies).

So you've never seen some of the gems on Spike TV, like:

Super2NR TV (with your hosts, the loser twins)
Nopi Tunervision

I like Car and Driver TV, and Trucks!

Anyways, I just want to say what the FCC is doing to Stern is an atrocity. Currently he just got shut off clear channel and infinity(?)which have a monopoly on radio stations.
There's a couple things wrong with your statement there.

- Stern has been booted from 6 (Six) Clearchannel stations. He's on dozens if not hundreds of stations across the country.

- Infinity Broadcasting is the company he works for, owns his flagship WXRK, and which syndicates his radio show. They're the ones putting out his show. Their his biggest backers, they aren't taking him off the air.

- Clearchannel owns a lot of radio stations but doesn't come anywhere near a monopoly status. They own something like 12% of all radio stations in the country. While a large percentage, it's nowhere near a monopoly. Certainly smaller than the vast radio networks that ABC, NBC, and CBS used to have years ago. (Big thank you to Don Anus for single handedly killing the NBC network and the flagship WNBC, and leather face still has a job).

- Clearchannel probably booted him for political reasons. They've carried his show for years, and he didn't say anything he hasn't been saying for the past 20 to get booted. But the whole reason Infinity has paid fines before was because the FCC would hold up the company from concluding business deals (such as buying new stations) until fines were paid. Infinity stuck to their guns that Howard did nothing wrong, but meanwhile they were tied up in court and prevented from doing business. In the end, they paid the fines to move on. And this happened under Clinton's FCC, so don't think it's just Powell's kid doing this stuff.

I don't think so. There are two competing companies right now, XM and Sirrius. One of them was set up by EDS and/or Hughes electronics which started one of the satellite TV services too. I believe both networks are denfense contractor types (who else is going to put up a satellite network?).

As for the station content themselves, I'm not so sure, but I'd wager that XM and Sirrius own the "stations" too.

Plenty of fascism on the left to go around. Some of Howard Dean's "shut up/you've had your say" comments, as well as Al Franken body slamming Lyndon LaRouche supporters at a Dean rally, come to mind. Political Correctness is the ultimate form of passive-aggressive fascism. We are well on our way to making thoughts a crime in this country.

Just to get my self thrown into this conversation of epic proportions (and possibly get it back on track),... I would just like to make a confession.

I am a 16 yr. old with a all-original 931. I myself would like to do some upgrading of my car (MSD ign, cam, C.A.I.) and heck even throw a Nos bottle in the back behind the rear wheel well. Now im not sure if this is 100% T.V. induced or just peer pressure from school or maybe its just my own need for speed (Porsche and High School are a odd mix if you know what i mean)....But to finish this, do you guys (from a porsche background) support me on what i might be doing to my 931?

FYI - The only reason i even became a porschephile is because of the game NFS:PU. So without that game i would probebly be a normal/average high schooler with a normal H.S. car.

Frank, Frank, Frank. You make it harder and harder to tell if you're just venting for the fun of it, or you're the guy that wears a t-shirt that says "I'm the reason they developed Prozac." Note the JK stands for "Just Kidding" as I always enjoy the decadent pleasure of reading one of your off topic tirades. Heck if I really had it out for you, I just call on 'Mi Familia' in 'TJ'.
