Wayne, please amend your rules

“Would have been nice to have been asked first, but responding to a post requesting information seems okay to me - particularly if the product doesn't compete with products currently on the site. That is the general rule of thumb around here...

Thanks for looking out for us though! Please continue to bring suspect posts to my attention!

-Wayne”

This post was written in response to my attempt to help out this site, by informing a new poster of the “rules” about commercial posting in the used parts forum, when the new poster responded to a WTB post, telling the WTB poster to go to their website if they wanted to buy a used product. The post was blatantly commercial and appeared to have not been cleared through Wayne prior to posting (this was the very first post for this company). Wayne has stated, in part, his guidelines for posting to the used parts forum, including the following:
"I have created this forum as an area where our customers can buy, sell and trade used parts. As such, there are a couple of guidelines that you must follow if you consent to use this board:

Listing Guidelines:

- No commercial postings allowed, unless you specifically clear it with me first.”

I ask: Is this rule not correct? Is this rule outdated? Should this rule not be uniformly administered? We are asked as participants to this forum to “bring suspect post to their attention,” but why? Apparently, the rule now is that it is allowed to post commercially, so long as the “product doesn’t compete with the products on the site”. Are we forgetting about the commercial posts that compete with the recreational seller/buyer? What about the recreational seller that is selling his stock seats to purchase new Recaros from Pelican, but now he can’t because the commercial seller that is not “competing” with Pelican, sold the seats five minutes before the recreational seller could respond? Or the guy that is trying to sell his Fuchs to buy a new 930S steering wheel? You get the point.

My point of this post is that it appears that either the rule needs to be amended to include language referring to “competing products,” or it should be enforced in a less arbitrary manner. If this site is going to allow commercial posts in the used parts forum that do not compete with the host and is in fact “the general rule of thumb around here,” then merely change the rule to reflect this fact.

Wayne, I like your site, and like I said above, I try to help the moderators out where I can (i.e., self-regulation). But, I frankly don’t see any sign of my efforts and the efforts of others, helping in any way, when the rules are enforced indiscriminately.

Now, I know that it is likely that I will get flamed for this post, because so many of you are supportive/protective of Wayne. Hey, I am one of those who support this site and still am, but I feel this problem needs to be addressed. Thank you for reading my post.

Waaah!

Rot 911 03-11-2004 07:52 AM

Scott, I don't see a problem when a person is asking to find a part and a commercial supplier responds to that request. Particularly when Wayne doesn't sell the part. (In this case stock factory seats). It's nice to know that there are people out there that carry these seats and can do custom reupholstery on them. On the other hand I appreciate the change in the rules that now generally keeps the first page of the parts classified clear of all the commercial advertising for parts.

krichard 03-11-2004 07:57 AM

I bet you were a volunteer hall monitor in school too huh???

RickM 03-11-2004 07:58 AM

The only Commercial "spam" I saw was from a ISP service provider...if I recall correctly. He was on the 911 Tech and Off Topic forum but probably on all.

I haven't been on ther Classifieds regularly. Are you describing another type of commercial solicitation?

Scooter 03-11-2004 08:04 AM

Rick,

This post has nothing to do with "spam". This post is about a rule change for individual commercial posts. Thanks.

nostatic 03-11-2004 08:10 AM

so are you upset because you want to sell stuff commercially, or were not allowed to do something, or ?

In other words, do you have a dog in this fight?

Hey, you! Get offa my cloud!

Scooter 03-11-2004 08:32 AM

I do not sell commercially; in fact, I have only sold one item in my history on this board. My "dog in this fight" so to speak, is that I believe a rule change is necessary. I am trying to help the moderators and Wayne where I can, but it is difficult to help if the rules are not correct or being enforced arbitrarily.

Drago 03-11-2004 08:33 AM

Can we all tell that Scooter is a lawyer?

juanbenae 03-11-2004 08:33 AM

any body need a watch (opening up front of long over coat to display a bunch of fake rolexes)?

Good looking Rottie. May mine rest in Peace.

Sorry, off subject but had to say it.

So after rereading you original post, your crying because Wayne didn't act on your tattling of a "commercial" post? I don't get your motivation. Are you trying to become a moderator? Also this is clearly OT. Why is this even posted on the tech forum. Shouldn't this be posted somewhere else???? Your doing a poor job of self-moderation.

Scooter 03-11-2004 08:55 AM

Thanks for your input Kerry. If you want this post to go OT, then please do your duty and alert the moderators. My motivation is to help make this a better forum. "Crying" and "tattling" are not correct terms to accurately describe my above post; it would be more accurate to describe my post as "concerned" and "informing".

911ctS 03-11-2004 08:55 AM

I think you put way too much thought into this. Are you like the PP narc or something?

that would not seem to be the majority opinion. However the minority is always welcome to offer a dissent (per supreme court rules)

Yea, if I cared that much about it I would hate myself and probably be a miserable excuse for a person. I could care less, the only reason I even looked at this post is because I just knew in my heart of hearts you were ranting about Wayne or the moderators not doing their "job" and I wanted to egg you on. I'm a prick what can I say.

I turned 30 a couple of weeks ago and have just been mean for no reason lately. Maybe it's an age thing I don't know. I old now and set in my ways!!!

Is that your bunny svandamme? Do you have any other bunny pics? I'd really like to see one with a bunny with a cupcake on his head. Or maybe a bundt cake? Do you have any? ;)

Burnin' oil 03-11-2004 09:11 AM

Due to my ADHD I was unable to maintain focus past the first line of the original post but the scathing replies were, as usual, entertaining.

RickM 03-11-2004 09:12 AM

30 was my toughest B-day.

Hey, that bunny pic is funny................

sorry mate...
the bunny grew up
then i cooked it in a stew like my granny used to

take one big pan, melt some butter
then bake/colour some onions and carrots,
and lay the bunny in pieces in it, bake it nice and fast so the meat is closed nicely. then add 2 StSixtus 8o abbey beers
two slices of brown bread with Dijon mustard on top ..

seal of the pot, and let it cook for about 2 hours

then let the whole thing cool off,
serve the next day, with nice mash potatoes

very tasty

ubiquity0 03-11-2004 09:18 AM

& a bunny bundt cake for desert

svandamme 03-11-2004 09:19 AM

not possible, after you at my rabbit stew with mashed potatoes
you will not have room for desert.

lparker 03-11-2004 09:21 AM

So what happens to the pancake? Does it go in the stew?

svandamme 03-11-2004 09:22 AM

nope, threw it away, the bunny crapped on it

Por_sha911 03-11-2004 09:26 AM

Hey how about those Boston Bruins?

Scott-would you go up to a police officer and tell him he's not doing his job? Even though you may (or may not be right) I have to question if it is your place to tell Wayne how to moderate his board IF it does not concern you. If you were not offended or wrongly treated, then all you are doing is, well, tattling.

IMO your options are:
1) Let Wayne run things since it's his football and be quiet about the injustices of life.
b) Go away mad. )That would be sad)
III) Go away and live in harmony.

Frankly, there is way too much fighting on this board about important matters (like the K+N and DME Chip wars) to be concerned over rules. Should we start using Robert's Rules of Order (don't tell Rob we swiped them)?

In closing Your Honor and gentlemen of the jury, let me p;oint to the bunny with a pancake on its head as undeniable proof that my car runs faster with the cool can.
Amen

stomachmonkey 03-11-2004 09:27 AM

Not really sure what the problem is, kinda hard to follow, need more coffee I guess.

I'm ok with it cause Scooter seems to have only the best intentions as a member of this community.

He is entitled to his opinion, which I wish I understood.

So back to the dogfight,

I see your Rottie and raise you one Mastiff,

I have seen this bunny before and it always makes me smile. Thanks for the uplifting post.

68'911 03-11-2004 09:32 AM

Scooter, regardless of wether or not I agree with you, isn't there a betterway of dealing with this...like writing a pm to Wayne. at least then you dont end up starting a thread like this.

Scooter 03-11-2004 09:34 AM

I actually did PM Wayne, but his response was vague and uncertain. I thought it would be best to bring this to the attention of the community, with the hope of receiving good quality input.

K. Roman 03-11-2004 09:47 AM

I sent a copy of this thread to my lawyer. Waiting for her comments, but until then she advised me to stay at least 20 threads away from this one.;)

68'911 03-11-2004 09:57 AM

That makes sense.

old_skul 03-11-2004 10:04 AM

It would seem you have gotten your share of quality input, Scott. I'm not sure what your aims were in bringing this to the attention to the community.

In my quest for a clean, well-moderated technical forum, I will refile this post in the appropriate category.
