*sigh*…wow!

To everyone that has said things in my defense, thanks.

To everyone that has said other things, I thank you as well. Your comments were deeply felt and warranted. I’ve learned a lot the last 24 hours. I’m not upset with anyone or their comments.

If someone told me what was going to transpired this past weekend, I would have laughed out loud. The driver offered (no…encouraged) from the ‘get-go’ and the whole afternoon was surreal. He kept telling me over and over that it was fine and he knew the owner. There were lots of people around and I was more afraid of something happening to the ‘supercar’ than my own. That does not release me of “doing the ‘right’ thing” and I probably should have refused. Be that as it may, it’s over and what’s done is done. I apologize.

Honestly, part of the reason I posted this was to report some on the scarier apects of transporting a car. Re-reading my original post sounds a little different. Not in my wildest dreams (well, maybe there) would I have thought this could or would happen. This was the first time I’ve had a car transported to me. If I do it again, I’ll do things a little differently. Do your homework and it will be fine. This was truly the exception.

Now, I want to go work on my car. I could use some wrench time. My ‘Car-Karma’ bank is a little low, if you know what I mean.

Die thread, die.

As previously mentioned....just drive your nicely washed and waxed Porsche up to the Lambo dealer...and ask to take a test drive. Look serious. No problemo. In fact...I think I might just do that....sounds like a fun car to drive.

You were extremely lucky.....If something happened you would have been liable for damages plus other laws broken. Here's an example of what you opened yourself for even if you did not wreck the car:

1. Transport of vehicle back to place of origin (owners request)
2. Transport to a Lambo dealer on a special transport.
3. Complete exterior and body inspection. ($1000,00) inevitably the
owner is going to see a scratch or blemish.
4. Repair of said blemishes. ( $1 - $4,000.00)
5. Complete interior inspection.
6. Complete mechanical inspection:
Clutchs inspected, engine performance testing, all linkages,
alignment, Tires, brakes and electrical system. ( minimum $8,000.00)
7. Transport to original destination.

and...if there is a lawyer involved, their costs.

By the way, your insurance will not cover you on this.....

I don't think you are a Lily Livered Coward, you are a person that knows right from wrong. Some people never learn it and never will.

It's NOT about the car, it about what right and what wrong. If you think it all right to take someone else property without asking or knowing that it's not your to play with then you don't know what's right ot wrong.

I would take it for a ride in a heart beat. Would I have beat it? No. But I would have gone through the gears on the freeway. What a blast that would have been.

Don,
You're a big man to accept everyone's comments without becoming defensive... Many good points have been made and it's a good "ethics scenario" to use in class or in a group to see what different people would do...

End this thread.
I think we have all learned enough.

Don, your response answers the doubters!:
What an experience. Did you plan for it? No. Did you do it? Yes. Were you careful? Yes!
Did you consider the owner's feelings? yes!

Internet infamy aside, I think you are sound. You seem concientious, and report honestly. I'm sure if the owner were to read this- which is basically a road report amoungst a group of discerning automotive enthusiasts...he may well be surprised: positively.

I hope he is anyway. Besides, I'm sure you would have reciprocated a drive in the longhood? By my reckoning, A FAIR TRADE!! :) :)

Heck, they pump out Lambo's evey day now. Longhoods? No Way!

Don's a good guy.

I'm going to move the thread to OT, now.

911Rob 03-17-2004 12:16 AM

My daughter is 23 next month and she won't drive my car.
Her husband drives it all the time.

I asked her why she won't and she said,
"Dad, you taught me not to borrow or drive anything I couldn't afford to replace. I can't afford to replace your Porsche if something were to go wrong, so I'm not driving it."

Hmmm, smart kid.

My son, who's 20 never gets the offer. He'd snap it up in a heartbeat.

As for Don's day; who knows? I can sit here and say I wouldn't, but I've driven friends cars, boats and planes with no second thought. Being a fan of Lambos, it'd be tough to turn down, but thanks to this thread, I'd say no tomorrow if the opportunity should arise.

Don, thanks for your posts, you seem like a great guy! SmileWavy

The temptation to drive someone else's $200k car without their knowledge is a lot like your boss's hot little 17 year old daughter... I think you know what I mean.

svandamme 03-17-2004 04:59 AM

boss's daugher is a no brainer
if she want's to , i'de go for it

his toy car.. no way

motion 03-17-2004 05:13 AM

Say, Stijn, what's the minimum age over there? Hey, just curious.

svandamme 03-17-2004 05:19 AM

16 something if there's concent?
dunno really.. chicks are evil, i stay well clear of em
they mess up my fragile little mind

edit

just looked it ed up, for Belgium ( i am Belgian , not Dutch ) the ruling is that anybody having anything with anybody younger than 16 is a bad bad person, even if the person involved did consent, because the court rules that below 16 , there can be no consent due to immaturity.

below 14 is basically statuatory rape as you call it, regardless of the circumstances or possible concent..

between 14 and 16, with concent it's called something less, can't translate it , don't know a comparrable term but it still get's you in trouble

anything above 16 is fair game , court assumes that anybody that age is capable of making it's own choices

Dutch law is probably similar, maybe a bit more flexible for as long as there is concent on both sides.

slakjaw 03-17-2004 06:48 PM

Maybe the driver let em go for a spin because he dosent like people looking over his shoulder while works?

ZAMIRZ 03-17-2004 06:53 PM

Damn, if I had the chance I'd tag the daughter in his car, that's the only thing a classy guy like me would do:p

slakjaw 03-17-2004 07:06 PM

i would have done the same thng

with the car or the daughter

nostatic 03-17-2004 07:55 PM

I would have keyed the car first...then I wouldn't have felt so bad about driving it.

It's all about perspective...and an Escher morality thing.

on-ramp 06-17-2004 04:48 PM

so what's the carrier company used so we know who to stay away from? and who wants to email this thread to them?

any takers?

:)
