Prisoner "abuse"????
One of the details I read about this "scandal" is that a naked Iraqui prisoner was given a dog collar, made to crawl along as a young female USA trooper in uniform led him around on a leash. Hmmmm. When that chick gets back to the USA? She'll be a wealthy dominatrix in no time!

I think that everyone who thinks that what those soldiers did 'was not that bad' should be subject to the same treatment by a couple of sadistic good old boys.
I wonder if they would change their minds on the subject? |

Jeez, That's a real knee-slapper Paul. A barn-burner.
Or is it a real "your town USA burner", as in diesel fuel and fertiliser? ![]()

Oh, and PWD, apparently some haven't yet moved beyond being appalled.
So you are not allowed to be anything but appalled until everyone else is ready. ![]()

There are some photos somewhere of Nazis doing similar things to people, I'll try to dig them up. They are HILARIOUS!

That same woman is in almost every pic. What has happened to her? Court Marshall? Description of "reprimanded" is way too vague.
As for Prisoner treatment, ask Daniel Pearl for his opinion. His experience is quite typical.

Weigh this pathetic situation equally..... http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=4&u=/ap/20040507/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_22
Do we expect to garner sympathy from the arab world? We should shut-up and stop pussying around.

While it almost pains me ever to agree with 350 on anything of political origin, I am going to have to agree, what those "soldiers" did was complete bull s!#@ There is no freakin excuse. This we did not have enough training, we did not have enough personnel, we did not have blah blah blah. What they did not have was a freakin brain. When I was in the first Desert Storm as a AAV track upgunned weapons operator, I personally witnessed several fellow Marines taking photos of dead Iraqi soldiers and posing with them. After seeing this, I took the camera, opened it, exposed the film to the light, and told the grunts doing this crap that if I ever saw it again I would personally see to it that they were court martialed for conduct unbecoming nco's. This type of behavior is not funny, not cool and not o.k. Making light of prisoners being treated in this manner is simply wrong too. Could you imagine if these type of phots came out of US POW's? Would that be funny too? I think not.
While I normally agree with a lot of Limbaugh's rants on political matters he and anyone else that makes light of this digusting behavior is dead WRONG! End of subject. There is no defense to these actions. PERIOD. Court martials for all involved should be forthcoming.

Rick: I guess that article shows their thugs are as bad as our thugs. I honestly don't see a difference.

I really think it is time to move on beyond being appalled.
I understand the shock, and at first glance it would seem that those US soilders where just goofing off, snapping seemingly random shots. But, maybe it's time to be a bit objective, and search for understanding. The thing that I can't get over is, these shots seem rather well thought out. . .staged, if the objective were to have a 10+ fold (horror)impact on the middle east culture, over the US culture. I mean, even US puplic access TV has shown sicker sheet than those pict's . . .and those (puplic access) guys where paying for the abuse. Contrast to the middle east culture, where women are to be the ones on the end of a leash, unedujukated . . .in a burka. (do they have leather spiked burkas?) ![]() |

DD,
I'll agree IF it's proven that we truly tortured and/or killed Iraqi (or any) POWs. To date what I've seen equates to repugnant, sophmorish stupidity and not hardcore torture and killing. Just my take on it.

The pictures circulated do not include the rape photos (for obvious reasons). I agree that if all that happened in those prisons was what was shown in the photos that American media chose to publish, the reaction would be overblown. However, there are two 'homicides' out of 25 prisoner deaths, plus reports of torture and rape as informally-sanctioned behavior. If this turns out to be true, we should all be ashamed.

Agreed.
The "widespread" and "miltary-condoned" abuse story seems to be blossoming as we speak. Allegedly cries from the Red Cross fell on deaf ears.

I sure hope the investigation into abuse isn't as partisan as the 9/11 investigation.
But that's probably hoping too much.

I agree with Glen that it is time to get beyond being appalled. Because after all, what is torture? What is mistreatment? Sleep deprivation is torture, but a common practice. Withholding food is another, but it doesn't necessarily kill, or more to the issues at hand, "humiliate."
However, this, I believe, has gone beyond being appalled - at least in as far as Congress is involved. Pfc. England is probably out of a job right now, for example; so punishments have been levied. The real question is the breakdown in the chain of command. The fact that (and I don't doubt this), that a report was announced - not in detail - but announced in January, that Iraqi and Afghani prisoner abuses were taking place, but went somewhat unheeded until 60 Minutes published the photographs. "Cover up" is strong, but vaguely appropriate. "Breakdown" is a better term. But that's semantics to a degree. The real issue is because of this "I didn't know," or "I wasn't aware" talk, one has to wonder what else is going wrong right at this moment with the war in general.
