Anybody a Packrat??

Here is my weekend question of the day. Are you a packrat and when it is time to clean up what should you keep? I have been a person who saves almost anything of importance and to me everything is important. I just can't throw anything away as long as it still has a use. Any ideas - I have heard of the 6 month rule - if you don't use it for 6 months throw it - but I always seem to find a use in 6 months.

Being military, I move every 2-3 years. If I don't use it between moves, it's gone. I figure if I don't get rid of it, the movers will destroy it inside 2 moves anyway, and 3 moves is equivalent to complete destruction by fire.

I have seen what being a pack rat can do in build up of crud. The elderly man behind me died recently and it took 7 garage sales and 2 40 yd. dumpsters to get rid of it. Nevertheless, I seem to be going the same way. I guess as ling as you can manage it, why not? The bad thing is leaving all the stuff for someone else to dispose of.

If you haven't used it in the last six months, generally you can pitch it. Except for car parts

I am a proud pack rat. Although I admit to thinning out my collection of stuff from time to time, I was able to keep my Kubota tractor going one cold day this past winter by using a spring I had removed from a junked photocopier over 10 years ago. The spring had to be shortened, heated and re-bent, but it worked until the proper replacement got in to the dealer. (My wife can't stand it) My son shakes his head & says "My dad is McGuiver"

Ever see George Carlans "stuff" skit? All about this very question. I try to go 'round the homestead periodically and organize an EBAY attack.

I can't stand living next to people who have so much crap that they can't get their car in the garage. I've been known to toss or dontate perfectly good/functioning tools, clothes, bikes, appliances just because they were taking up space. I drive my wife nuts.

My name is David and I am an anal retentive type A neat freak SOB.

Consider the bizarre case of the Collyer Brothers.

As a matter of fact, my best friend accused me of being a pack rat this past weekend. Of course it wouldn't have anything to do with the bulging garage full of Porsche parts I have collected, the 2K square feet of wood flooring I've saved for 20 years until I build that house, or the 500 bricks I've had for the same amount of time waiting to build that barbecue, or the Scott ski poles I used to use in the early '60s. All good stuff though.

What get's me is when I'm going to throw something out I look at it and wonder which part I can store and catalog for a repair or invention down the road. It took alot for me to toss an old-faithfull belt sander the other week without taking it apart for the brushes, stator, rotor, gears...get the picture?
