Actually, I thought the HumVee was cool, and there was a point when I would have liked to have had one. But I wanted a HumVee, not a Hummer, in much the same way I'd really like a Scwimmwagen, KubelWagen or Unimog. I still think a mil-spec HumVee would be cool, but what do I know? I drive a non-airconditioned and am slowing eliminating creature comforts like CD changers and sound deadening.

"That being said, as soon as somebody has the authority to tell someone else what to drive or not drive, all of us Porsche owners are in trouble."

Not a lot of Abrams tanks on the road, these days.

lendaddy 05-06-2004 11:18 AM

I think the massive amount of hatred is cause of your location, big cities, congestion, etc.. Here in Michigan these things rarley cause an inconvenience to anyone else. Live and let live.

How anyone can compare several million 6,000-lb. trucks on the road to a few tens of thousands of Porsches is beyond me.

America is full of consumers. Where do you draw the line? Do you tell Americans, "Thou shalt not live in 4000 SF homes, because it's a waste of resources." "Thou shalt not remodel thy home because your 60s decor is perfectly functional." "Thou shalt ride public transport even if it means you have to walk 12 miles each day."

My point is everything is relative. You spoke in absolute terms, and I'm saying it's no so d@mn easy.

I fail to see the great advantage at criticising one's choices. After all, the one who chooses to drive the Hummer will defend their choice. Who's going to admit they're wrong?

Are there really millions of 6000lb SUVs on the road? Are there truly only a few thousand Porsches on the road? I don't like SUVs, and I'll do my d@mndest to never own one. I'll respect others decisions, as I would hope they would understand my decision to own a Porsche.

cowtown 05-06-2004 11:53 AM

Driving around in circles on the track in your inefficient Porsche is more wasteful than any Hummer. Where does all that driving get you? Nowhere!

Sure I complain about all the idiot SUV drivers, but it's not because they're inefficient; they're just dumb.

Exactly. And dumb + 7000 lb. vehicle = disaster waiting to happen.

When some soccer mom (late for her PTA meeting, jabbering away on her cell phone) is barreling down the freeway in her urban assault vehicle, I am more worried about the F=M*A side of things.

"Are there really millions of 6000lb SUVs on the road? Are there truly only a few thousand Porsches on the road?"

There have been about 350,000 Porsches produced worldwide. About half are in the U.S. Presumably more than half are on the road, but I'm not sure where I'd find out actual numbers.

Since 1989, 3.1 million SUVs have been sold, and God knows how many "Class 8" trucks which have a Federal tax incentive* that's being applied to the 6,000 lb SUVs as well.

I don't have a weight class breakout, but yes, it's totalling in the millions.

Esp the H2s. . .what a joke! It, and the others based on 1940s (bad) technology make me cring.

Ingredients: Take a heep. . er Jeep; Super-size it, Slap in some leather & cup holders, piece on a tonka-truck facade, a big ol price tag, and Bam. ..the perfect idiot wagon.

At least the HumVee has some engineering behind it.

I've read this thread backwards and forwards 5 times and I can't find the word "Cayenne". I thought for sure I would get somebody to take the bait ...... ;)

kumma 05-06-2004 04:00 PM

i've received some flack about my full size jimmy, 7 feet tall with oversized tires. the commie pinkos who complain usually walk away with there tail between there legs, mumbling, when i tell them i drive less that 2000 miles a year going fishing and to hunting camp and back how many miles do you drive per year. wonder how many days a year these "enviromentalists" spend in the woods?

after all this is america right? i can drive anything i can get licensed by the state and those who complain can suck my tail pipe.

kinda funny how suv owners like jeep cherokees and the like dont see them selves in the same light as hummers. wonder how many pictures were taken from suv's.

well if it makes you feel better, I'm flipping you off right now. ;):D  :p :)

Zeke 05-06-2004 05:41 PM

I never would have considered an H2 which is really a Chevy truck frame with a Humvee look alike body. I have a 1989 Chevy truck. Simple, single cab half ton. Weighs 6200#. Great mode of transportation.

But, just knowing that it pisses off all these people, who could probably easily be proven to be hypocrites, makes me want one. What color would you suggest?

cegerer 05-06-2004 06:06 PM

Exactly Zeke - unless these critics are all driving Honda Hybrids, they're hypocrits. In fact, if they really practiced what they preached, they'd all be riding bicycles, not motorized transporatation.

So true, and what I don't get is these people usually talk about the right to freedom of choice in the US as a holy grail and a given...but basically they don't want anyone but themselves to have it. Hypocrits - exactly.

I still think the link is funny though.

island911 05-07-2004 08:54 AM

Ah yes, freedom of choice . . .it is nicely balanced out by freedom of speech.

(read: we get to ridicule those whom make absurd choices- now thats balance)

speeder 05-17-2004 08:47 AM

Yup.

island911 05-17-2004 08:55 AM

Hmmm.. .is camo back in?

It doesn't really seem that people are playing soldier, as much as they are saying "I demand you resect me, not for my driving skills, but for my absurd size."

Granted, it may be as absurd as playing soldier . . .but not the same. . .or accurate.

Eric 951 05-17-2004 09:53 AM

Just a question

Do any of you want somebody else telling you what to purchase and drive?

Yeah, I know what you mean. . .those bastards at Hummer keep on trying to tell me what I ought to buy/drive. (their product.)

Then those eco-freaks keep telling me to drive some battery laiden ugly-car. . .full of toxic heavy metals.

AHHHH. . all of these demands! http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/vuur.gif

Like I said before; freedom of choice . . .it is nicely balanced out by freedom of speech; in that we get to ridicule those whom make absurd choices.
