WMD? Wonder what the spin will be on this.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A small amount of the nerve agent sarin was found in a shell that exploded in Iraq, the U.S. army said Monday in the first announcement of discovery of any of the weapons on which Washington made its case for war.
Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt told a news conference the substance had been found in an artillery shell inside a bag discovered by a U.S. convoy a few days ago. The round had exploded, causing a small release of the substance, he said.

"The Iraq Survey Group has confirmed today that a 155 (mm) artillery round containing sarin nerve agent had been found. The round had been rigged as an IED (improvised explosive device) that was discovered by a U.S. force convoy," he said.

"A detonation occurred before the IED be could be rendered inoperable," Kimmitt said, adding that two members of an explosives team had been treated for exposure to the substance.

Kimmitt said the round, designed to mix the sarin in flight, belonged to a class of ordnance that the ousted government of Saddam Hussein claimed to have destroyed before the 1991 Gulf war.

"It is a weapon that we believe was stocked from the ex-regime time, and it had been thought to be an ordinary artillery shell set up to explode like an ordinary IED... when it exploded it indicated that it actually had some sarin in it," he said.

IEDs are bombs usually planted at the side of the road to explode as coalition vehicles pass.

The United States launched its invasion of Iraq last year, accusing then-president Saddam Hussein of developing chemical, biological and possibly nuclear weapons. Failure to find such weapons has stirred criticism in the United States and Britain, Washington's closest ally in the war.

Kurt, puleeze, we all know that there are not now and have never been WMD's within the borders of Iraq from the Hussien regime. This one was obviously planted by the Boosh administration. As a matter of fact, Hillary Clinton has proof, which is stored with her Rose law firm records, that little Donnie Rumsfeld, while in Iraq last week, personally planted this sarin filled bomb. After Mr Rumsfeld, dropped off the bomb, he conducted personal inspections of 3 POW camps to instruct the Army jailers in new methods of prisoner humiliation. Included in the lesson plans were the best ways to make a camo thong stay on a prisoners head and better posing techniques when pointing at nude prisoners weiners. Mr Rumsfeld was quoted as saying that it was a succesful trip and he looks forward to a return as soon as another political deflection is required.

Iraq began producing sarin in 1984 and admitted to possessing 790 tons of it in 1995.

The article leaves lots of questions unanswered.

But let's say there were a few ounces of sarin in an artillery shell.

They found a thimble full of a banned agent that Iraq once possessed by the ton? And was supposed to have disposed of? I'm shocked! Let's invade Iran! Could be some lead-based paint on the shelf there! It'll only cost $300 billion + countless lives, our stature and goodwill in the world, (Republicans tell me that we don't need this), plus it could be a windfall for Halliburton and create a lot of choice jobs. Some of those workers will get blown up and mutilated on film, but what the hey! Got go now and drive my Hummer w/ the flag stickers on it!

I repeat, there are no WMD's in Iraq, except those that the Boosh administration is now planting.

Of course a single artillery shell with sarin gas is WMD...by definition...duh

Of course I am familiar with binary weapons. They mix during flight to produce the toxin...beats mixing them in your kitchen. You use an artillery piece to launch them...hence "artillery shell" What does that have to do with anything? The article makes it clear that it was rigged as an IED.

I don't get it. The UN, France, Germany, Russia, Kerry, Kennedy, all of them thought Saddam had MWD. He acted like he had WMD. Why? To keep his neighbors in fear. The difference was the response, sit and wait to see when he uses them, or take action. When someone pulls a gun on a cop and he shots to kill, he doesn't stand there and try to figure out whether its a real gun or a fake.
